In closing, prosecutor says parenthood pushed Scott Peterson to kill

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — Scott Peterson killed his pregnant wife because fatherhood threatened his "fantasyland" double life as a "rich, successful, freewheeling bachelor," a prosecutor told jurors during closing arguments Monday in his capital murder trial.

Prosecutor Rick Distaso said the fertilizer salesman strangled or smothered his 27-year-old spouse, Laci, in their home on Dec. 23 or Dec. 24, 2002, so he could be free of the lifetime of responsibilities the child would bring.

"He didn't want adult married life. He didn't want Conner Peterson," Distaso said, referring to the child Laci Peterson was carrying.

The prosecutor said Peterson had long maintained two lives — "the perfect husband" in public and in private, a cad grudgingly tolerating his marriage — but the birth of his first child and the expense of raising the boy or paying child support jeopardized the secret side he treasured.

Yes RG that's what they are saying. It makes sense to me also because there were four drops of SP'S BLOOD on the master bedroom quilt. Poor Laci probably had her top up over her head. This coward attacked her from behind. If you see any pictures of Laci's nails they look like they could be acrylic nails to me and those suckers are hard and strong. I can see her digging her nails into his hands. One other thing from the house that stands out to me - NO woman makes a bed like that with the quild tucked in all around. Looks like a man's job to me. Who said there was no forensic evidence? Then here is the hair WOUND around in the pliers.

That's a good analogy but I must say that Peterson even out performes Jeffrey McDonald.!! That call from his wife's vigil to his girlfriend pretending he's in Paris at the Eiffel Tower. Fireworks in the background, his friends, Francois and Pasquale!! I just went cold when I heard that tape. If you see the pictures of Laci's father and brother weeping profusely, her mother doubled over with grief, TOTAL strangers crying, and this A$$hole was celebrating freedom!! *puke*

LOL - so right you are. Prosescutor Dave Harris was so good in cross examination that he even had the good Dr.s hair gel melting!! ROFL!! The Jury was laughing "outloud" at this guy. The expert was begging for slack???!!! OMG! Do you hear that giant flushing sound?

Jackie - you klutz!! LOL - that's the way to get a day off. Actually, I'm hoping to do likewise. IF they are only at the boat, I'm not sure the Verdict will be tomorrow. But I do think, if it's not tomorrow, it will be at the latest no later than Wednesday. At least I hope so.

I agree. If she weren't so obviously intelligent and personable, her cuteness and perfect proportions would be incredibly annoying. lol

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful! (Not a line I get to type very often, ha, ha, ha.)

Thanks, rb.

You know, reading the FR threads on the angst and agony of election day, I realize that I spent most of the day here, or reading Peterson threads at CTV or Websleuths...

All those trolls who came on and asked why we bothered with this case when there was a crucial election going on should have relaxed a bit and hung out with us a bit more, they would have saved themselves a lot of trouble, not to mention calories and hangovers from trying to cope with the roller coaster of election day.

Congratualtions to all the multitaskers, who managed to get Bush re-elected, and now, haven help us, may get Scott put behind bars for all the rest of his life!

My exczema is clearing up, too. :-) (I know, TMI! lol)

Real early this morning I heard on CNN radio news, it was evidently old news, from Friday, but they were saying something about the jury having problems deliberating. The news said it didn't have anything to do with any jurors being ill. The news said they did ask for a few exibits but was having problems deliberating and would be sequesterd for the weekend.

Have any of you heard anything about them having problems deliberating?

I've been watching CTV since 9:00, and there's not any indication of problems. The boat just arrived at the courthouse.

Talking heads can, and probably will, speculate in any direction they choose to, because everything about the deliberations is an unknown.

They were sequestered over the weekend because that was the judge's decision at the end of the trial. They will stay sequestered until they reach a verdict or they are hung.

The one thing i appreciated about Beth Karas was her lack of pretension on whether or not she thought Scott was guilty. You can just smell the disdain dripping from her lips as she mentions his very name.

Do you remember the other Peterson case. Michael Peterson. Vinnie Politan was the correspondent that time i think. He just continued to try and be impartial the whole way thru. I really didn't like him for that, because i knew that he knew the guy was guilty. But whenever NG or somebody would make a prosecution point, Vinnie would come back with "yes, BUT...".

Great Kudos to Beth Karas. I love her!

I just got back on puter and it sounds like the jury has arrived to look at the boat in the courthouse parking garage. I'll ping on this thread if anything comes up.
I agree that this boat viewing may be that they are close to a verdict.

Hi Jackie, (all).

My theory is that someone on that Jury has some serious doubts with enough weight to get that boat delivered to discuss their "issues" with the others.

Remember the O.J. trial? They discarded everything else except "if the glove don't fit, you must acquit".

"If Laci don't fit, you must acquit." Perish the thought they are going down that same path.

Bracing myself for the verdict.

I'm an eternal optimist, but my read is that they are going through all the high points of the case, to make sure i's are dotted and t's are crossed.

I don't think this necessarily means that there are any serious hold outs, but maybe reluctance on some jurors' parts to casually cast a 'guilty' vote. After all, this is a Death Penalty case.

On the otherhand, I know that none of us, including the talking heads, knows a thing about what is ACTUALLY transpiring during the deliberations. :-D

But this sure beats reading depressing exit polls! lol

Ah, the boat...do I understand, from one report, that this boat is almost flat bottom? I mean, I never really thought about it, but when you look at it out of water, that must jump out at the jurors, how it adds ballast.

I don't know, but methinks since the one juror must leave for her surgery, we are about to get a verdict.

Exit polls, LOL!

Someone has some doubts about something concerning the boat. Why else would it have been brought to them to examine?

I don't know if it's been discussed, but Scott could have anchored before he slid Laci's body overboard. Anyway, doesn't matter now.

I honestly don't care if he gets the death penalty, or two consecutive life sentences. Just as long as he is found guilty.

We wait...

Jurors while viewing the boat asked to get in and Judge allowed it.
Of coarse MG who IS there objected went back into court and asked for either a mistrial or to have the Def. demonstration admitted.
Both request denied.

NO Spunky, I am home today and heard none of that from any of the hosts so far!! BUT I don't believe there is total agreement in that Jury room. There are some very strong Jurors for the Prosecution on the Jury. I don't know of course where the Dr/LLB stands or #6 but I won't cry if it's a Hung jury. I expect that they can come to a Guilty verdict but if not, then hung is the next best thing. At least it keeps Peterson behind bars and he WILL be tried again and likely convicted handily. What I couldn't stand is to see him walk out the door a free man.
