"We need a legalization program for those who have been here for a long time, haven't had problems, they have been employed, have paid their taxes and their children are US citizens we want to help them to become legal immigrants."

See #32.

And in so far as Bush's plan would allow an illegal to become a 'guest worker', who would then be able to apply for permanent residency -- it is a form of amnesty. Its not as bad as Kerry's definite amnesty, but its still not good.

That's strange, considering how both Tancredo and Buchanan publicly support Bush's reelection bid.

What, are they supposed to just be silent about this issue because they happen to disagree with President Bush, even though their views on the subject have more public support than Bush's?

One problem with the guest worker program is that its easy for the Democrats to simply outbid, or outpander, on the subject. Bush offers a guest worker term, Kerry offers eventual citizenship. Which to do you think is going to get the support of the MSM?

There are also problems with the proposed Guest Worker Program. First of all, it doesn't even begin to try and address the phenomenon of anchor babies. Thanks to the unforseen consequences of the 14th Amendment, anyone born here is an automatic citizen. That's true for children born to illegal aliens, and it would be true for guest workers.

Also, Bush's plane seems to be completely open-ended. Its not limited to agricultural, or seasonal work. Again, it tips the balance tremendously towards employers over labor.

If we could get a true Guest Worker Program, made up of guests (i.e. people who eventually go home) and that is limited to areas where employers truly can't find native help, then that would probably be a good idea.

In California, we are drowning in illegals. I don't even recognize our state any longer -- signs in Chinese and Spanish,.....

I agree, I live in California. I was raised and worked with Mexican-Americans, so "Latino" is not an issue with me. It is the amount of illegal immigration that is the problem. I assume that entering this country by other than legal methods was/is a problem or Washington would not have made it illegal.

Cultures don't offend me, it is simply the shear number. Illegal immigrants are overwhelming our schools, housing and "the trades" that are important to the entry and support of the middle class. The one consequence of so much immigration has been to rob Black-Americans of the public education and employment in good paying trade jobs that move them into the middle class. If any one group suffers the most from the massive immigration from Latin and Oriental countries, it is Black Americans. For that, they can thank the Democrats.

It's time to publicly discuss, in Congress, the 14th. Amendment, just as much as terrorism.

Well, I know which proposal the MSM would favor. As usual, that's not my position.

it doesn't even begin to try and address the phenomenon of anchor babies.

That wasn't an issue in the old guest worker programs, because the only ones who could come here were the workers. Their families were left behind (although they could freely go back to visit). Sure, there were probably some babies born here, but relatively few.

I don't really care which jobs they fill, but I do care about the rules. Essentially, those are that the worker comes here, leaves the family behind (except for visits), maintains a permanent home in their country of origin, and goes back when the contracted job is over.
Bush's plan is much closer to the old one I remember than Kerry's is.

There are a lot of jobs that have a shortage of workers at some time or another, and guest workers can be a good solution. My guess is that most employers would prefer to deal with a legal guest worker agency than to hire illegals if they had the choice.
