Kuwait oil refineries halt production due to power cut

KUWAIT CITY : Kuwait's three oil refineries, which have an output capacity of 920,000 barrels a day, halted production due to a total power outage that hit the emirate, a Kuwait National Petroleum Co. spokesman told AFP.

"The three oil refineries stopped operating gradually after the power cut (which hit) the country", said Mohammad al-Hajeri.

As Jimmah Carter said in the 1970s, "turn down the thermostat, and put on a sweater."

Meanwhile... the US legislature "turned down" W's energy policy.

Although interesting the outage shouldn't effect the price of "crude oil". Appears they are talking "refined" petroleum which could be several products to include jet fuel, diesel or gasoline. I broker crude oil on a daily basis and actually find the price dropping for those countries that do not necessarily observe OPEC quotas. We are starting to receive offers as low as $34.00 per barrel as of Friday.

The windows are amazing how effective they are. The people who installed them are a father son team. First the son measures each window and then they order the windows made to the millimeter. Then they can install a ton of windows in a day. We don't even hear the barking dogs any more.

>>It is really getting ridiculous.

It is. So, we got ridiculous right back. Here in PA, our gas bills were well over $1000 a year for the kind of toasty atmosphere I've been used to. After a bad year of medical expenses and car repairs, I couldn't expect to afford any heat at all this year (2004). And word is, gas bills are going up by about 15 percent. Last February I disconnected the gas furnace altogether and got a couple of electric heaters out of the attic. Used fewer rooms in the house and shut the doors and seal the drafts. Down comforter and an electric blanket; warm clothes. Temperatures were severely cold (outside) in March but we got by with minimal discomfort. The electric bill was still reasonable. We're doing it again this year. The only thing I need to replace for 2005 is one hot water bottle :)

Moral of the story, you can live very well without 70 degrees of heat, without astronomical fuel bills. I expect we'll save about $1000 this winter. Gives me a warm feeling. :)

We use small elec. heaters for bedrooms, and Kerosene heater for living room areas. Them things really put out the heat. We run it for a couple of hours and have to shut it off...too hot.

The kerosene is sold for about $10.00 for a five gallon container. We go through 3 containers a winter...that's $30.00, not too bad for heating our home.

there is no need for the present prices, other than just generating obscene profit.

so, you think refiners are immune to high prices? why do you think prices are higher? it's because what's being produced is in such high demand by refiners. they pay more. we pay more. do you think this business is somehow immune to the forces that affect every other?

That's about our bill a month as well $200.00-$250.00. Small price to pay for my sanity.

The Brits have been doing that forever.

Years ago my wife was complaining about how cold our house was (64 to 67) in the winter. One of her best friends who grew up in the UK told her to buy more fleece outfits and sweaters and put them on. So for Christmas I bought her several nice winter Fleece outfits. She put them on, and I love cooler temps.

["We have had one of the coldest Octobers in N California in a long time. "}

We're have the opposite here on the Gulf Coast...unusually warm and dry for October.

Either way, it's Bush's fault.

i.e. Dark Start

IIRC - Industry term which details the problems of bringing up a large power plant if neighboring plants are also down.
Apparently many plants do not have the ability to "start" themselves. They require external power to resume operations. Thus a Paradox is encountered.

Best example was the NE blackout last year.

The new vinyl double pane window are so much more effective than the older ones.

We put the older aluminum double panes in our master bedroom which we added to the house in 1978. They are not that effective.

When we lived in N. Virginia in the mid to late 1960's, I had permanent storm windows that could be opened for fresh air installed. They cut the heating bill and AC bill by about 40% and paid for themselves in the first year.

What ever happens is GW's fault. Either way he is too smart or too dumb and as the root of every problem.

How is it possible for the "entire" Country to lose power?

It is strange. But Kuwait isn't much bigger than Harris County, Texas, if it is at all.
