Action filed vs. radio hosts over talk attacks

By Lisa Friedman Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON -- In a complaint to the Federal Elections Commission, the National Republican Campaign Committee accused radio station KFI-AM (640) co-hosts John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou of "criminal behavior" for attacking Rep. David Dreier, R-Glendora, and endorsing his Democratic opponent, Cynthia Matthews. By criticizing Dreier's positions on immigration, promoting a "Fire Dreier" campaign and making on-air appeals for voters to elect Matthews, the NRCC said, the hosts gave Matthews an unlawful corporate, in-kind contribution of more than $25,000.

Is it just me... or is the Republican position here looking more and more anti-constution and moving toward the "fairness" doctrine. I say GOP/Dems/whoever let the talk shows endorse whoever. Don't know if this has been posted before... but I do think it matters.

I agree. We're not the party of whiners. We need to stay positive.

I think they are not only wrong to do this, but crazy. If the man thinks they've slandered him or something, let him sue them. Believe me, if I thought you'd slandered me I'd sue you in a heartbeat. But if all they are doing is disagreeing with the guy's positions, well, so what?

This isn't about the "Fairness Doctrine" so much as McCain-Feingold. John & Ken also targeted Democrat Joe Baca as part of "Political Human Sacrifice"; but, Baca isn't filing Federal charges over it.

John and Ken are not going after Baca the way they are going after Drier. The way they are going after Drier is tantamount to harassment. If they really want to fight illegal immigration, you think they would bring up before election day - the congresspeople who ARE doing things to fight illegal immigration and the matricular consular card...like Elton Gallegly, Congress, Ventura County.

This is going to backfire on us. If we win, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are off the air.

Surprise. I was expecting another John Kerry attempt to go after Hannity, Bill Bennett and Neal Boortz, all radio guys and all campaigning for Bush this weekend. There isn't a chance in hell, that Dreier can be defeated in his district.

I live in Dreier's district and while I have a lot of problems with his illegal immigration record, there ARE other issues that Republicans need to put into the mix. These include the war on terrorism, taxes, resisting government-run healthcare and other entitlement monsters, etc. Dreier's opponent talks a good game about immigration, but on ALL other issues, she is a honkin' huge liberal. Any Republican who votes for her is insane.

On the other hand, I think the Republican Party is seriously misguided in this lawsuit. Practically speaking, it has made matters worse, and ideologically speaking, I hate anything that curtails free speech, even if I don't like the speech.

That being said, John and Ken have a real lynch mob mentality and are demagogues of the worst order. Despite their getting hold of some good issues, like getting rid of Gray David and the Trevor Law Group (bogus lawsuits against small auto repair shops), their research on national issues is so superficial, they come out with soundbites re the war on terror and Iraq that are straight out of the Democrats' talking points. It just infuriates me.

Plus, it gave me the willies the other day to hear John say, "WE got Gumbie (Davis) kicked out of office." Now, I wanted Davis out of office and voted that way. But it creeps me out to see radio hosts so enamored of their power. Like I said, their show has a lynch mob flavor about it that I find repulsive.
