Right war, right time, right man(backs President Bush)
NYDAILYNEWS ^ | 10/31/04 | Editorial

....Most seriously, Candidate Kerry's clearest position on the war undercuts the cause a President Kerry would be obligated to fight. As Washington Post columnist Jim Hoagland put it: "Kerry's repeated denunciations of Iraq as the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time weaken the moral and perhaps even the legal base for ordering Americans to continue to fight there if he becomes President." World leaders — those Kerry intends to rally and those already committed — could not responsibly risk their citizens in a misbegotten fight.

At this critical juncture, America cannot afford such a lack of clarity — or even a hint that a President would revert to playing defense rather than staying on the offensive. Nor would it be wise to change commanders midbattle in Iraq and around the globe, replacing a tested leader with a man who would have to learn on the job under the most difficult circumstances. With so much at stake, that's a transition not to be wished for.

Returning Bush to office is the wise course, The News believes, despite our sharp disagreement with his domestic policies. Those pale in comparison with the overarching challenge of securing the nation and preserving New York's vital way of life. Of the two candidates, Bush has the clearer vision for accomplishing the goal, as well as the greater experience. He gets our endorsement.

Yep, as predicted, the Daily News endorses Bush, after absolutely slandering him for years.

As usual, the power of the publisher (Mort Zuckerman, as pro-Israel as he is pro-America) trumps the power of the loony-lefty newsroom.

I am shocked, shocked, shocked.
The Daily News has been absolutely trashing President Bush every single day for the past 18 months at least.
Why on earth will they endorse President Bush today, when they have been trying to get his defeated by all their headlines day after day?

They had headline after headline on Bush "under fire" over his military service up to just recently.
Wonders shall never cease.

I'm certainly not surprised. I'm a daily reader of the Daily News, and I've found that their editorial page has been leaning right-wing (on foreign policy issues in general and the Battle for Iraq specifically) for some time now - and, IMO, decidedly so. They may be playing to their blue-collar "base", but nonetheless, that's how it has been.

This is in contrast to their reportage, which has been and remains extremely slanted. The anti-Bush bias in their news stories just stinks.

It's an interesting dichotomy that I have been following all year.

Staten Island:
I agree with you 100%. I cannot even browse thru their news pages anymore as the coverage is so unbelievably slanted toward the left that I have taken to calling it the Poor-Man's NY Times (figuratively AND literally).

But Mort Zuckerman is so pro-US and pro-Israel that his viewpoint has obviously prevailed on the Editorial Page.

This endorsement will come as a shock to the average Daily News reader, who still thinks Bill Clinton is a god.

This is a replay of 2000, when they also endorsed Bush, to everyone's stunned amazement.

Jhensy - you have hit the nail on the head. Mort knows that the safety of Isreal AND the USA has improved since GWB took office and stopped dealing with terrorist. GWB made it clear no killers from the middle east get to sit at the table.

They most definitely did NOT endorse Bush in 2000.

Maybe I'm thinking of the News endorsing Dole in '96? I know I've scratched my head over their endorsement before.

Maybe that was it (although I doubt it), but I distinctly remember the NY Post being the only one to endorse Bush last time.

But based on their editorials from the last 3 years, I felt this was coming.

Okay. There's hail in Hades this morning. That said...

Kerry's domestic agenda is preferable. He would repeal Bush's tax reductions on incomes of $200,000...

Nice little slap in the face to small business, there. There still are small businesses in NYC, aren't there? Bloombug hasn't driven them all out or into bankruptcy yet? If small business owners vote for Kerry they need their heads examined.

Actually, the News has some pretty pro-Bush columnists- Zac Chavets, for one.

It says in their endorsement today that they endorsed Gore in 2000.

I am going down to Philly today with a bunch of NYC volunteers. I'm going to take the News' endorsement today. Maybe I can sway some Philly voters....

The article itself says they endorsed the Dems 12 years running.

They're wrong about Bush's domestic policies, though criticisms there are definitely in order, but this is a big and very welcome development. And Zev Chavets has been a joy over there, for the short time I've been reading him.

I wonder what impact this might have in NYC. We've now got the Post, Sun, and DN for Bush, and the Times and Newsday for the other guy. Times readers are probably too far gone, by and large, but I wonder about the rest.
