BUSH HAS THE MO [NRO, "The Corner" - another chat with Bush insider]

BUSH HAS THE MO [KJL]

That's the GOP message tonight as they work to the ends of the continental U.S. and beyond--to Honolulu!! Bush/Cheney is confident this Saturday night. They believe these last days will prove they have made significant inroads throughout the U.S. at the grassroots level. Starting yesterday, 150,000 volunteers are working in the tightest states, contacting 18 million voters to get out the vote for W. They say they’ve registered 3.4 million more Republicans since the last presidential election. That those GOTVers are volunteers, too, they say is significant.

In Florida alone—on Friday alone—GOP officials say volunteers knocked on 170,000 doors and made 200,000 calls. Though E Day they expect those numbers to hit 17,000 volunteers will 800,000 doors and 1.2 million calls. Just in Florida, a state where they’ve been confident for more than a few days now. But it’s not lackluster in Ohio either. GOP officials are saying 14,000 volunteers will knock on 400,000 doors and make 990,000 calls.

Yup. Unbelievable, huh?

Do you have a link to that AP story? I would love to read it.

Kerry plans to hit Milwaukee, Detroit and Cleveland on Monday. That's where he still needs to vote mine?

You know what else I noticed? When Bush campaigns in the blue states, he specifically asks Democrats for their votes, citing how Kerry is nothing like the great Dem leaders of the past. That tells me he figures he's got his base as energized as he can get them, and he's going for some of Kerry's base.

These appeals to Democrats have produced a great speech line: My opponent has traded the vision of bearing any burden, paying any price and helping any friend for the more convenient "wait and see" and "cut and run."

I think it's over for Kerry and he knows it.

I live in NJ - a liberal bastion if ever there was one - and work in a Union shop. There are more Bush supporters in the shop than Kerry supporters - despite the efforts of the Union. People realize that nothing else matters if we're all dead.

If liberal NJ feels this way; the more sensible states must be solidly behind President Bush.

I haven't changed my opinion one bit: Bush will win and it's not going to be close.

Did you hear he's basically planning to declare victory no matter what, because he thinks Gore's mistake in 2000 was taking back his concession?

Yes, and he's going to announce his cabinet picks soon, too. I just think that he's about to really step in it--if he claims victory when it's obvious he's lost he will make the Dems even more ridiculous than they already are. TWo candidates giving victory speeches is gonna be embarassing.

I heard on a Milwaukee radio station today, that they had 2,100 people show up to train to work the polls and get out the vote. The County Executive said he has never seen anything like it. Downtown Milwaukee is very democratic, but the Republicans are very organized and ready to go.

Just read the NRO report about Fox reporter getting thrown off plane. Unfortunately, someone in the Kerry campaign has a brain. They decided not to throw Fox off of the plane.

Neil and Alan Colmes, discussing OBL tape, Alan mentions that there is no Kerry/Edwards sticker in cave, Neil says he thought he saw button. Funny, I think so!

Kerry campaign, just like their candidate, has NO sense of humor.

I think the "lawsuits galore" will be the dog that doesn't bark, at least not as loudly as some peopel think. The public outcry will be too much--Kerry will back down, confining his legal fights to a few brushfires.

I agree. I think the "HUGE" voter turnout will another dog that doesn't bark. It was promised for Howard Dean and never showed up.

"Why would a campaign operative leak such a story?"

Because while Kerry has no national career after this, the campaign staffers do. By leaking the story, the campaign operative a) earns the trust and respect of the reporter, which is the bread-and-butter of Democrat party hacks, and b) distances himself from the looming disaster.

No. Losing doesn't motivate people, winning does.

They were not talking about losing. They are talking about momentum shift. They may be trying to motivate their constituents to get out and vote OR they could lose. Big difference.

Truth is, Kerry is the worst candidate ever. Thank God for that.

Despite those vaunted 2000 internals, he lost the popular vote and barely won in the EC. I'd rather he keep on running hard until the last minute.

Do you think 'average' people ever get tired of knocks on the doors, political mail and phone calls?

Does anyone know if the media called the polls "close" the year that Reagan swept every state but one?

No, they did not. Reagan was clearly going to win big. But in 1980, Carter was ahead right up to the last day, and lost in a landslide.

Agreed--when HAS this "huge turnout" ever happened when predicted?

I think the UBL tape works more to depress Kerry's turnout than anything. People who personally loathe Bush may stay home and "let" him become presidenct--they can still say they didn't vote for him, but they didn't help the weak Kerry get in.

Hello,

Today, I went out with another volunteer and worked to GOTV here in St. Louis. Our goal was to remind identified GOP voters how much their vote counted. I was told that each name that we marked as a YES for Bush, would go on a list. On Election Day, the MO GOP will have people at the polls, and if by 12:00 PM, those "Yes" voters have not been to vote, they will be called. If by 4:00 PM, they have not been to vote, a Bush Volunteer will be sent to their house to ask if they need help getting to the polls. I was amazed.

Glad to be here, MOgirl

AP by way of the Washington Post:

"As Bush and Kerry crisscrossed Midwest battleground states, a new poll [Newsweek] showed the president moving ahead of Kerry in the popular vote, and Democrats said their private surveys hinted at momentum for the Republican incumbent."

2,000 lawyers draining out of every state would be a massive story

We got way to many lawyers here in SC, they can have all of ours they want!

"Compare that GOP confidence to the Kerry campaing insider's "leak" to an AP reporter today (Ron Fornier) saying their internal polls showed a Bush lead and a general momentum in Bush's direction. Why would a campaign operative leak such a story?"

That right question, definitely. And this, more than anything, is evidence things are moving in Bush's direction. Why would a campaign operative dis his own side? The answer is found in examining potential motives. Certainly, such a leak doesn't help this operative's candidate. But it DOES help this operative. Fournier is well-connected. Whoever this operative is, if his leak proves true, he's just gained a valuable friend in the media.

Such things only happen at the end of a losing campaign.
