Again, your comments are off the mark so far as Bob Smith is concerned.

You keep repeating this as if it is an argument. Yet you offer no supporting evidence.

Those of us who are offended by Smith's endorsement of the most pro-abortion candidate ever to run for the Presidency, on the other hand, keep pointing out to you the obvious hypocrisy of this move. The only possible justification of it is that Smith never really cared as much about abortion as he said.

Is that really so hard for you to understand?

In any case, I'm with EternalVigilance. I've got way too many things to do on a Saturday afternoon to get involved in a flamewar with an idiot who thinks that someone endorsing Bob Kerry could possibly be pro-life.

I agree with you, and don't know what most of these posters are thinking except for knee-jerk support of Bush. Bush started this by stabbing Smith in the back, not by only 'not supporting' Smith, but by actively supporting his opponent in the primary.

Think Arlen Specter, for comparison. Bush could have supported the conservative candidate for PA Sen., but instead he backed Specter, one of the most liberal GOP Sens.

BTW, there's plenty of 'nutcases' and loose cannons in the senate -- McCain, Chafee -- that Bush supports.

And BTW, the reason Hatfield and Sununu's father support Bush is because they are now lobbyists in DC and need to support him in order to earn a nice living. In contrast, Smith served in the senate trying to make a difference, and when his time was up he retired instead of living like a parasitic worm on the body politic.

I will assume by your logic that you favor large government spending on more federal programs such as prescription plans and Ted Kennedy style education.

even marginal Republicans endorsing Kerry.

What about John B. Anderson? He endorsed Mondale because he hated Reagan. I haven't heard a peep out of him in years.

Well, since Kerry and Bush aren't talking about abortion, I guess the Supreme Court justices they appoint for life will avoid the subject as well.

As the debate goes on (or doesn't go on), the abortions do also!

As I recall, GWB gave "nominal endorsement" to Senator Smith in the 2002 primary.

If you want a case of a Republican stabbing someone in the back: Governor Perry in TX in 2004 put up a candidate to deny renomination to Supreme Court Justice Steven Wayne Smith, the court's most conservative member. And Paul Green took the nomination from Smith, and Green is now unopposed on the Nov. 2 ballot. I am hoping that Justice Smith tries for another court seat in the 2006 primary. But he may lose interest, seeing how dishonest the TX GOP leadership can be. Of course, Perry could say that he didn't beat Justice Smith, but the voters spoke.

A "real" conservative would NOT support John Kerry! Case closed!

Apparently, you feel a real conservative kissing Kerry's butt is OK then! No way a real conservative could support Kerry, so your whole case is not supported. Bob Smith is not conservative.

Is it a "fool" that calls someone an idiot?

Justice Smith asked in 2003 to meet with Perry. The governor, acting like a French patrician, would not even allow the Supreme Court justice to come to his office.

This treachery may yet cause problems for Perry. I think there is a March 2006 primary that he may need to consider. Kay Bailey Hutchison, to her credit, did endorse Justice Smith. I suspect some conservatives will have to take second and third looks at this upcoming primary.

I know one can say that Smith was outpoliticked, but that does not excuse such high-handedness by the governor.

Bob Smith. Isn't this the A-hole who bailed on the GOP and then came scuttling back with his tail between his legs, asking for his seniority back?

Just the kind of guy the 'rats love (and deserve).

Technically an "idiot" has the mind of a six-year-old. I never use the term, but some do abuse its application, I would say.

Bob Smith was also against opening up oil drilling in Alaska? He was a flake "poser". It was depressing to see people on FR defend this nutball.

Can anyone explain why Kerry mentioned Bob Smith in a comment during one of the debates?
