Not a straw in sight around here. You are arguing for the sake of arguing. It was dishonest and deceitful for JFK to refer to it as a raid. He is trying to downplay the emotional impact. You argue about the literal meaning of a word(IS) and everybody else seems to be way past that. You having a bad day or is there a nefarious reason for your position?

1 a : a hostile or predatory incursion b : a surprise attack by a small force Where's the mass murder in this description?
To: AM2000
The word "raid" minimizes the terrorist attack.

Nefarious reason. Satanic extraterrestrials probed me this morning and installed a mind-altering chip in my admittedly chimpanzee-sized brain.
You got anything else to say? If not, please feel free to go back to looking silly by this petulant silliness over the use of a word you don't really understand.

Yep. In the '70s, while our economy was completely tanking, Jimmy Carter told us that outrageous taxes, interest rates, inflation, and unemployment were the face of the future and we would just have to get used to it.
With Kerry as president, he'll tell us that terrorist attacks here and abroad are just how things are and we better get used to it.
In Kerry's world, the way to stop terrorist attacks is to shut up and do nothing as the muslim world overruns us. Europe is showing us the way and he completely agrees.

The Navy calls the attack on Pearl Harbor a "raid" as well. That attack also involved mass murder of Navy personnel, among others. It is an accepted use of the word.

That's obviously a subjective judgement, and I respect your right to make it. However, the word 'raid' is accurate.

I'd give it a pass.. Pearl Harbor was/is referred to as an 'air raid'The military was the target at Pearl Harbor.

"Interesting, too, that he has to say, "we always knew it was Bin Laden."
... and I wonder just how he " always knew it was Bin Laden." ???
Since he didn't/dosen't believe the intelligence reports he did/didn't get - just how did he "always know" ?

Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe since this kind of attack (9/11)is so new that no old words seem to fit.
To: ellery
Not only did we have U.S. Special Forces with the Afghan troops at Tora Bora but we also had GERALDO RIVERA there bravely ducking and dodging sniper fire! What does Kerry want?

Actually, I think this kind of attack (9/11) is very old and had died out for a few hundred years. It's reminiscent of medieval wars where an army suddenly attacked a defenseless village, murdered all the males, raped all the women and took the children with them as their slaves right before they burnt the whole darn thing down.
It's a very old style of warfare.. it harks back to more barbaric times.

The military was the target at Pearl Harbor.During WW II and the Cold War, attacks by air on civilians were known as air raids. There were air raid shelters, sirens and drills.
It's not a gaffe

Technically speaking, Kerry is not correct. According to FM 7-8, the Light Infantry Platoon and Squad, "a raid is a combat operation to attack a position or installation followed by a planned withdrawal." The 9-11 attackers didn't have a withdrawal plan.

Poor form old boy. Ya don"t score points by claiming you posses the mystical power to divine the truth of a word. Kerry is wrong trying to remove the emotional impact of the Sept. 11 attacks by using a monosyllable word. We are talking about the actual use of a word in communication, not the sterile literal dictionary meaning.

People;
Forget the symantecs and nuiance of the response to the Bin Laden tape. Concentrate on the facts of what the tape represents....
Bin Laden has come out in support of sKerry for President of the United States. He is not afraid of sKerry.
He is afraid of Bush.
If he had capabilty to mount an offensive against the US he would have done that; not create a video. That is what he did in Spain and to a lesser extent with Australia.
The tape needs the tag line from sKerry "This is John F'n SKerry and I approve this message".
To: ellery
"I believe I can run a more effective war on terror than George Bush," Kerry asserted."
Your a TRAITOR sKerry. Take a long walk on a short pier.
