East St. Louisans deny voter fraud

Illinois Republicans urged officials on Friday to look into "potential instances of massive voter fraud" in East St. Louis, showing pictures of an East St. Louis Democratic precinct committeemen's home that dozens of people registered to vote have listed as their address.

But it turns out that that address and another called into question aren't single-family homes but are boarding houses or apartments that may house dozens of people.

After some of the irregularities turned out to be less controversial than advertised, Republican spokesman Jason Gerwig said, "If everything's fine, that's great. We felt there were enough instances that bear a look (by authorities). This is the first time the state party has been active in ballot integrity issues."

The Republican Party has been prompted by a tight race for Illinois Supreme Court to conduct its most thorough investigation of the state's voter rolls in 20 years, said Judy Baar Topinka, Illinois treasurer and chairwoman of the state's Republican Party. She held press conferences Friday in Democratic strongholds throughout the state, including East St. Louis, where she spoke in front of the building that houses the East St. Louis Board of Election Commissioners.

"Indications of voter fraud have already been found to be rampant throughout Southern Illinois," Topinka said in what she called a nonpartisan effort. "I'm confident that state's attorneys, U.S. attorneys and U.S. marshals will take the necessary steps to ensure a free and fair election."

In the Supreme Court race, 5th District Appellate Judge Gordon Maag, a Democrat, and Washington County Circuit Judge Lloyd Karmeier, a Republican, are battling in a highly contested and well-financed race.

A hint of media bias: portraying the voter fraud as some sort of mistake.

Don't worry about it. I'm told vote fraud impacts less than 0.5%.

I wouldn't worry too much. If it isn't close, they can't cheat their way to a fraudulent win. There are only so many corpses, felons, illegal aliens, and non-residents that can get away with casting an actual vote. And it will certainly NOT be a close race. GW is going to win it by a country mile. Thank God, only 3 1/2 more days of putting up with that scumbag Monsieur Kerry and his ambiguously gay side-kick. I can't wait for all the wailing, gnashing of teeth, and pulling of hair from liberals, foreign and domestic. This is gonna be sweet.

While I agree the percent is small, but, frankly breaking the law makes me pretty ticked off.
