Open Letter to John Kerry
My original thought | 10-29-2004 | Rusty Nelson

was asked the other day what would I say if I saw John Kerry face to face. After pondering the issue in my head for while I came to a conclusion. I would look him square in the eye and tell him, "You, Mr. Kerry, are a pig." It's a little harsh and demeaning but it is how I truly feel. Would my comments stop there or would my mouth over run my brain and continue the blast? I'd probably lash away. Not that it would do any good. At least, in my mind, I would feel vindicated. Here is what I would say...

"How selfish could you be? After spending four months in 'Nam you have the audacity to speak before congress and spew lies about your fellow brethren. Your, so-called, Brothers in Arms. Some sat in a POW camp while you started your political career. Why? Does loyalty mean nothing to you? Evidently not. It seems your desire is to hold the most powerful political potion in the country, no matter who you have to step on.

I do have to commend you on returning from that place with no apparent mental breakdowns. Every ‘Nam vet I have met either suffers from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) or is on various drugs to calm their mental state. I guess it was all those war crimes that you said they did. But didn't you testify that you also committed these same war crimes? Yet you suffer no ill effects. Amazing. So amazing that you want to lead our troops now. I guess so they don't commit any of those war crimes. How thoughtful of you. With that thought, the next time I look at my father and try to bring up the ‘Nam war I can excuse the cold sweat and violent shakes because, you Mr. Kerry, labeled him as a war criminal. Thank you Mr. Kerry for showing me the light. I am glad there is a man of your stature, running for office, and looking out for my best interest. I guess my father deserves the scars on his neck and ear because, as you said, he was a war criminal. The pictures of him lying, bleeding, on a hospital gurney were his just due. According to you he shouldn't have been over there. I guess he should have taken Mr. Clinton’s route and avoid the draft all together. I guess my father needed to join you in throwing his purple heart over the fence.

Those pictures I saw of my father hugging Vietnamese children was right before he blew up the village, as you say. Is that not what you said, Mr. Kerry? That ALL soldiers committed those atrocities? Burning villages in the same manner as Genghis Khan? So the picture I saw must be misleading. Thank you, Mr. Kerry for showing me the light. I always thought my father was fighting for the freedom of another country so those people could enjoy the freedoms we have. But I guess he didn't go over there with that premonition.

Do you get the point, Mr. Kerry? Probably not. Your selfishness dilutes your vision of true, selfless soldiers, who have the heart of a patriot. Soldiers who love freedom so much that they would lay their own life for another country so it does not fall in the hands of tyranny. To these soldiers, freedom is more important than holding any political office. So much, that they endured, not only heat from the battlefield, but from the anti-war movement here in our own country. The same anti-war movement you helped promote and are still promoting.

I hear you spouting off the same rhetoric about Iraq as you did against Vietnam. The patterns seem similar. Breaking the very fiber of the soldier for your political game. You had a chance to vote against going in there, but you didn't. Now you turn your back on the military, once again. Looks like you’re helping us lose another war. We didn't lose Vietnam because of lack of military power. We lost because of the anti-war movement you helped create. How do you feel walking past the Vietnam War memorial in DC? As you read the names, do you see war criminals or fearless soldiers? Have you ever walked past that memorial? I'll give you a little secret; they are not your brothers. They are names you help put up there. I hope those names haunt your dreams.

What do your medals represent? If they are indeed your medals? Isn't there footage of you throwing your medals in protest? Where they yours? Who knows? The only one who knows the truth is you. But telling the truth is not one of your strongest personality traits.

Kerry, you are not worth the dirt on my father's boots after he was shipped back, hurt, from Vietnam after being blown up in a half-track by the hands of a North Vietnamese guerilla. The only soldier, and I use that term loosely in your case, which deserved to be spat upon after returning from the battlefield is the one you see when you look in a mirror. You are a disgrace to anybody in uniform, yesterday, present or future.

You are Unfit For Command, as one author puts it. The best thing you can do is quit this race and try to reconcile all the damage that you help create. An apology would be a great start.”

I thank the real soldiers who fought for my right to speak my mind.
