Something To Yak About - Kerry Playing Defense Coast-to-Coast As Support Erodes In Key States
Interpreting the ebb and flow of campaign politics is as much art as it is science, but there's little left to the imagination when it comes to John Kerry's situation. The Gentleman from Massachusetts finds himself playing serious defense in states he should have wrapped up before Labor Day - not the sort of position that suggests a successful candidacy. Read on...
Hawaiian Islands Backing Bush
Back in 2000, Al Gore carried Hawaii (4 EV) by 19 percentage points. But the Oct. 17-20 SMS Research poll actually showed President Bush leading John Kerry 46% - 45%. Sure, it's margin of error, but this is a swing of 20 points against Kerry. These data also confirm a Ward Research poll conducted Oct. 13-18 showing President Bush leading by a slim margin.
Vice President Cheney Westward Bound For Hawaii Visit
For the first time in the campaign, Hawaii will host a rally for one of the top candidates on the ticket, with Vice President Cheney winging his way to The Big Island this weekend. The vice president's visit is so significant, it's even news in London. Maybe one of the reasons John Kerry has squandered a 20 point advantage in Hawaii is that his campaign rhetoric on the economy isn't even close to reality. Hawaii has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation - 3.1%.
Yaktoid
The last time Hawaii voted Republican for president was 1984, when Ronald Reagan captured the state's four Electoral Votes en route to a 525 - 13 EV shellacking of Walter Mondale.
Which Exit Does Kerry Take In New Jersey?
The Quinnipiac Poll of Oct. 21-25 showed President Bush tied with John Kerry in New Jersey (15 EV), with both pulling down 46% of the respondents. These data were virtually mirrored by the Oct. 24-26 Strategic Vision Poll, which showed the race tied at 44%. The problem for Kerry: Al Gore carried New Jersey by 16 points in 2000.
Dead Heat In Michigan
The John Kerry campaign must be going nuts over the current Zogby International and Strategic Vision polls in Michigan (17 EV). The Oct. 24-27 Zogby poll shows the race tied, and the StratVis survey of Oct. 24-26 also shows the race tied, with the president up from last week. This - in a state Al Gore won by 21 points in 2000.
What The 'Show Me State' Shows Kerry
Want to talk about the 'Must Carry' states needed to win? Look at the history of the Democrat Party during the entire 20th Century and one thing is unmistakably clear - no Democrat has EVER been elected president without winning Missouri. Today, John Kerry trails the president in the Show Me State (11 EV) by 3-4 points depending on the poll.
Yak It Up
What we've given you in this oh-so-brief issue of The Yak is but a part of the whole but with 96 hours to go, it boils down to a huge problem for John Kerry - being forced to defend turf that should have been in his column two months ago. Talkers Profile - Sam Greenfield, WWRL/New York City
"Originally from Washington D.C., Sam graduated with honors from Howard University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master's Degree in Education. He quit his doctoral program to join a rock band and since that time has been a standup comic, actor, writer and now enjoys success in the field of talk radio." The Final Yak
"We don't need someone who voted against funding our troops during war to take my remarks out of context. Like the President I wholeheartedly support our troops. If John Edwards is looking for someone who is blaming our troops without the facts, he need look no further than his running mate, John Kerry." (SOURCE: Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Oct. 28, 2004)
In all the hubbub over Ohio, this little tidbit often gets forgotten.
The only part of the article I take issue with.
It should read "The Traitor From Massachusetts"
Always walking on the flag.
Don't just vote, BRING SOME FRIENDS WITH YOU !!
This is all wonderful news! I was just looking at the 2000 numbers on presidentelect.org and Kerry is in big trouble.
...And he ain't gonna win Missouri in 2004 folks.
There aren't enough stupid liberals in STL or KC COMBINED to do it for him. The rural vote and most of the suburbs of both cities are solidly behind Mr. Bush.

NO NO NO!!!!
Cheney should NOT be going to anywhere near Hawaii. It's a mirage. Even if it's close, Bush won't win it. He should be focusing on Wisconsion, Minnesota, New Mexico, Ohio, Florida etc.
It was a sure bet that Kerry's poll numbers would start going south as soon as Al Gore started actively campaigning for him. Good ol' Al is always the kiss of death.
Oh no, I was hoping for Laura and/or the Bush Twins. All we get is the old, bald man? 8-)
George W. Bush will win reelection by a margin of at least ten per cent
