Joe Feagin, professor of sociology at Texas A&M, who grew up in a predominantly white Houston neighborhood during the civil rights movement, said in a seminar Thursday that racism in the United States has changed from being an extroverted problem to an introverted one.
"There are two types of white Americans: racists and recovering racists," Feagin said. "Lamar High School had one black student then, now it is mostly a school of color."
Feagin said the United States is physically diversified but still subconsciously unwilling to mentally accept racial equality.
Ruth Thompson-Miller, a sociology graduate student who works under Feagin, said the seminar addressed key issues that need to be out in the open; otherwise, they will never be solved.
Feagin is heading an ongoing study that calls for students of mixed races to keep daily accounts of any racial discrimination in a journal over the period of two months.
"About a thousand students have been surveyed so far, 626 white students, 100 black students, 90 Latinos and a few Asian Americans," Feagin said. "Each student, on average, recorded about 15 accounts of some form of racial discrimination, about seven of those 15 were blatant racial remarks."
Feagin said that even though the media reports that race discrimination has improved much since the civil rights movement, it is still a serious problem.
"I think that the racism that I've seen (at A&M) has been not blatant racism, but more so covert forms of racism," said Narietha Carter, a senior English major. "It's not necessarily stupidity--it's not being exposed to one-on-one contact with a specific group of people, be it black Hispanic or female, or taking images (that the media releases) and applying it to (racial groups)."
Carter said she comes from an almost completely black neighborhood.
"A majority of my friends are Caucasian, so I make it my business to make sure I don't feed into stereotypes," Carter said.
Feagin said he doubts that the problem of racism will be eliminated within any of students' lifetimes.
"Even though the jump from extroverted racism to introverted racism is a step forward, it is still a hell of a problem," Feagin said.
What?
So if we are to understand this in plain language, the conclusion is "even though we can't see racism our knowledge of psychology tells us it must exist."
This comment offends me greatly.
what a load of crap.
thanks for posting it, tho..
He should be fired.
Try watching BET for about 15 minutes...
That sounds like a racist comment to me.
Don't forget the third type - the type that would kick the pansy ass of any impressively credentialed barking moonbat who would dare make such a bigoted and ignorant accusation to his face.
There are two kinds of black Americans:
unproductive ones with a chip on their shoulder who will never contribute to the society in which they live
and
those who vote republican
Ain't just white folks..
Feagin has now proven himself to be a racist. Please contact Jesse Jackson to get a new job.
Subconscious racism is a serious medical condition. Ask your doctor about Whityzac.
It must depend on definitions. Complex phenomena should not be oversimplified.
Feagin went on to say that "today's racism is so subtle and subconscious so as to scarcely be noticed by anyone. But that makes it even more dangerous."
There are 2 kinds of professors of sociology - idiots and bigger idiots.
How can this man say this and not realize the statement he made IS racist?
There are two types of ivory towers, one for idiots and one for simpletons.
I agree, black racism is everywhere. This past week, the Dallas media covered the retirement of the first black (female) deputy chief in the Sheriff's Deptartment retired. Sje apparently was well regarded and was asked a bunch of softball questions. She responded to one by saying words to the effect that she hoped "there would be many other black deputy chiefs." That is subtle but blatant racism. Can you imagine a white deputy saying that he hoped there would be many more WHITE deputy chiefs? No one grumoed at her as they would have ANY white person.
What horsesh*t.
