WASHINGTON A U.S. soldier is coming forward Friday to say a team from the 3rd Infantry Division took about 200 tons of explosives from an Iraqi military facility soon after Saddam Hussein's regime fell last year.
The soldier will appear before reporters at noon, EDT. The briefing will be shown on the FOX News Channel.
The announcement is the latest twist in the mystery over what happened to 377 tons of explosives that the International Atomic Energy Agency said had disappeared.
The soldier's story comes as new videotape has surfaced that supports the contention that tons of the explosives were still at the base following Saddam's fall on April 9, 2003. U.S. officials had said they suspected the explosives were taken before U.S.-led forces took Baghdad.
Videotape shot by a Minnesota television crew traveling with U.S. troops in Iraq when they first opened the bunkers at the Al-Qaqaa (search) munitions base nine days after the fall of Saddam Hussein shows what appeared to be high explosives still in barrels and bearing the markings of the International Atomic Energy Agency (search).

I am confused. Is this good or bad for W? I understand that it was not missing, but is this lapse in the chain of command bad, how will the dims twist it ?
I guess Kerry and his MSM cheerleaders are gonna have to revert back to that old tried (and tried, and tried...) and true (NOT necessarily) Halliburton storyline.
John to John: Well, there's always Halliburton ("You know Cheney was once a part of Halliburton and I was once in Viet Nam") ad naseum...
Can they just say WHAT THEY FOUND AND WHERE?
Rush is running the news conference right now - so is Fox News. They're fielding questions.
It is disgusting to hear those creepy media people cross-examining our military guys. Who do they think they are? They actually think they know more than our guys who were actually there!!!!!!!
Listen to the Pentagon press conference...
The U.S. military destory the weapons.
Bottom line.
Kerry and crowd just tack back and forth with the news cycle.
I'm not sure the huys answers makes sense.
He's talking at a micro level. Who cares how you packed and when you got home at 2200 or whatever it was.
Why not just address the question of what happened to this crap. Did they leave stuff behind? Was it gone BEFORE they arrived? Can you answer that?
It's hard to get to the bottom line when the IAEA keeps changing the "facts" that the MSM is blessing as truth.
"The U.S. military destory the weapons.
Bottom line."
Then WHY doesn't this guy just state that?
The more he talks the more confusing things get.
The accompanying moans you hear are strictly background noise....unavoidable.
They're Kerry voters.
Confusion is what the Dems are hoping for--at least at this time. It takes a few days for researchers to nail down many of the facts (fog of war and all) and I'll bet the Ruskies did take stuff out of those bunkers to Syria and there were some explosives left, AND..., WELL, NEVER MIND!
The fact is, the DNC and the MSM jumped the gun again without getting their facts straight just so they could make Bush "look bad" and get their girlie-man hero Kerry elected.
This is good for Bush - it shows that the stuff was being taken care of by our guys and that Kerry, the MSM, and the U.N. are in cahoots with each other to spin any lies they can in order try and hurt Bush. Since it was only about .1% of weapon material that has been destroyed on over 900 sites, nobody in their right mind could expect any one person to know about it.
"Sir! We went in there and did it in a day ....it was not that significant."
"It's hard to get to the bottom line when the IAEA keeps changing the "facts" that the MSM is blessing as truth."
Why do we have to go by what the IAEA says? We were there, so why can't they say it was either GONE before we came or moved some where else etc. ?
Um - What can Kerry do now? Explosives not looted, but destroyed. Soldier says he came forward when he heard about the story Monday in the NYT and contacted Pentagon.
Looks like they took a few days to get the ducks in a row, then, after Kerry had made enough rope to hang himself (insulted troops, etc.) They hold a press conference.
They don't call Rummy a modern day Machiavelli for nothing!
Because the MSM is only reporting one side.
Thank you for posting the whole story.
The other thread has so many posts I could not find the actual story itself.
