When the Major first heard about this on the news, he thought it was something recent. After seeing the videos, he realized that was during the time he'd been there, and he contacted his chain of command.
He said he heard about the story on NBC, and when he saw the map, he said that is where he was with his troops.
So, he contacted his Chain of Command, and here we are.
No...he got home from his job, saw the news, recognized the video, contacted his chain of command, who put him in contact with the Pentagon.
