Like most major donors to Section 527 organizations, Sarasota's Frank Brunckhorst prefers to let his money do the talking.
Brunckhorst, 42, the chairman of Boar's Head Provisions, one of the nation's leading purveyors of deli products, has given more than $900,000 to Democratic causes in the past year.
Brunckhorst's emergence as one of the Democrats' money men has surprised local and national leaders from both parties, who said they had never heard of him until he started writing checks for as much as $500,000.
"This guy wasn't on any of our radar screens before this year," said Derek Willis, who tracks political donors for the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Public Integrity. "I don't want to say he's come out of nowhere, but that's almost the case. He's raised a lot of eyebrows."
Even Brunckhorst's uncle, Richard Stavitz of Richmond, Va., was surprised by his nephew's contributions.
"I didn't realize he's given that much," Stavitz said. "I have not the foggiest idea what is motivating him."
Like many big donors to Section 527s, he expresses his views through his donations, not his public statements. His public comments on the election have been limited to two sentences July 22 in the Orlando Sentinel: "America has been very good to me and my family, and I don't like the direction the country is going in, in terms of fiscal responsibility and other issues. I'm in a position where I can help."
Brunckhorst was a registered Republican in Sarasota County in 2002 and in his native state of New York in 2000.

And I thought the Dems were the party of the little guy.
Well, that's the last Boar's Head product I'm buying.
You would think teh party of tree huggers would not mix well with a meat company.
I guess we have bought our last sub makings. Pity.
It just goes to show you that Democrats get their money from liberal fat-cats while the GOP get theirs from hard-working individuals in smaller donations. I never heard of this company before but thanks for that link. I usually buy my holiday meats from Nueske's anyway.
Me too - too bad, we really like their product but there are other companies just as good!!
Whats with the 900,000$ why not spring for the other 100,000 and make it a cool million?

What, if anything, is known on Karl Ehmer?
me too.
I couldn't find an email address and the phone doesn't have a message recorder.
Damn, I like their products, though they are expensive. I guess I won't be buying them anymore.
I will not be purchasing any more Boar's Head ham.
