IT'S THE ISSUE that just won't stay in the closet. Republican politicians run skittishly from talking about same-sex marriage. The polls from Hawaii indicate they should be highlighting it.
Hawaii elects Republicans about as often as the Red Sox win the World Series. Only twice since statehood has a Republican president carried Hawaii (Nixon in 1972 and Reagan in 1984). Yet the latest polls show Bush leading Kerry by a percentage point. National and state Democrats are in a tizzy. How can this be? The unknown factor may be Republican Mike Gabbard's campaign in Hawaii's second congressional district.

Considering that the Republican (anti-homo marriage) position has overwhelming support all over the nation, their skittishness is mystifying.

If marriage protection can win HI for W, it surely MUST win him OH.
Not only that, but the 'Rats have ignored them for decades.
Even an atheist would have to believe in miracles if Republican Mike Gabbard unseats the Hawaiian Democratic Congressional incumbent, but hey! it could happen...
I'm not convinced the same-sex marriage issue is the think lifting up Bush in Hawaii. There are a lot of other issues which seems to me would be higher on the list and from editorials I've read, even Republicans don't favor Bush's proposed constitutuional amendment.
Also, keep in mind that Hawaii is within N. Korea's missile range.
The RATS have ignored most of their voters for decades, but they are a very good sell to them in talking points and promises.
I would give almost anything to see that Neil Abercrombie lose his seat in a coat tail movement.
W's recent pro-gay-civil-union endorsement is clearly directed at grabbing votes, especially in Hawaii, which is so close...

I am in Hawaii and even I have to admit this is wishful thinking. Mike Gabbard is behind 29 points in the latest poll and has only just started running ads. On the other hand Kerry must be nervous because Move On and Kerry have been running an ad a minute on local TV here since yesterday. I am still skeptical though because the polls didn't include the outer islands from what I heard and they are way more local and hippie and tend to vote against there best interests.
Just my thoughts. BTW I was voting 3rd party but am not going to throw my vote away now.
You never know but I don't think Mike Gabbard (although he is a very great guy who helped get the anti gay marriage ammendement passed here) will win and while the President has a chance I think this may be a way for Hawaii to get a voice because it is usually overlooked.

I'm glad it's Kerry that has to defend more of his states than Bush does. The press isn't saying it, but the Kerry campaign is in deeper trouble than any of us realize. This state shouldn't even be competitive at all for the GOP.
The Bush campaign is only running ads on cable. I have not seen very many signs either. Mostly local politics going on here and that is what most people concentrate on it seems.
It would be cool if it all came down to Hawaii.
I think Hawaii should be a U.S. territory like Puerto Rico. Hawaii and Alaska shouldn't be states. If you want 50 states, make Upper Michigan a state and cut California in half north and south.
