Schwarzenegger Says He Won't Travel More for Bush (Will stump in Columbus, Ohio Friday)

Schwarzenegger Says He Won't Travel More for Bush By Adam Tanner, Reuters

SAN FRANCISCO (Oct. 27) - Popular California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said on Wednesday he spurned White House invitations to campaign more widely for President Bush and has agreed to just one joint appearance.

Such aloofness could prove fatal to an ordinary politician. But the Hollywood superstar and former Mr. Universe, a moderate Republican, didn't seem too worried.

"For me it's a balancing act, of course you know, because if I don't campaign for President Bush, the Republicans will be angry. If I campaign for President Bush the Democrats are angry," he told KTKZ radio in Sacramento.

"I think there is a happy medium which I made very clear. I will not go and travel around the country with the president because my work is here."

Schwarzenegger did travel to the Republican National Convention in August on Bush's behalf in his tight race against Democratic challenger, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.

But he said he had to draw the line at campaigning more outside California and after considerable hesitation, agreed to just one appearance in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday.

He said he only made his decision on Tuesday.

"We were thinking that we would go and then maybe that we would not go and then we finally decided to go," he told reporters.

Schwarzenegger, a fiscal conservative and social moderate, faces re-election in 2006 in California, a state where Democrats are the dominant party and one that will surely back Kerry.

He came to office through California's unprecedented recall election last year, and has become the party's dominant figure in the nation's most populous state as well as a big draw on the national stage.

Friends say the Austrian-born 57-year-old would ultimately like to be president, and he repeated on Wednesday that he favors a change to the U.S. Constitution to allow foreign-born Americans to be president. Bipartisan support would be necessary for any rare amendment to the Constitution.

Schwarzenegger is married to Maria Shriver, whose uncle was Democratic President John F. Kennedy.

So much for the Terminator. More like Little Red Riding Hood! Bush gives him a national stage at the convention, and this is how he repays Bush and the party. Arnie sucks!

***sigh***

Once a RINO always a RINO

Well I guess he DID do a good job at the GOP Convention and suffered 2 weeks of sleeping on the couch for it.

Otherwise I still think he should do more for the President notwithstanding.

This isn't bad,.

We only need 1 visit from him anyway.

He's a novelty act and clips of his speech will be played everywhere in Ohio, and on some of the cable channels.

I heard some lines from yesterday where he said something to the effect that he had to take his pumpkin back because it was a democratic pumpkin. It had Kerry's face color and was round like Teddy Kennedy’s face.

That last one probably won't go over so well at the next "family" gathering.

I think he should do more for the President and take a stand...he is a Republican...support the party that got you in power. At least he is going Friday to Columbus and this is a needed place W needs to win and will spotlight a lot of attention to Bush and OHIO!!! But...a bit dissapointing...

Is that the name of the article? Could it be more negative?

How about, "Schwarzenegger to campaign to secure Ohio for Bush" or "Schwarzenegger for one last go around" or "Schwarzenegger backs Bush in Ohio"

Maria now keeps Arnold's balls in a jar, and he has to negotiate for their use. Maybe Hans and Franz have an opening for you in 4 year Arnold.

LOL - Reminds me of Sam Kinison's routine about being married. The one where he plucks the microphone off its cord and says in a screeching female tone: "You won't be needing this anymore!"

How many times did Bush appear for Schwarzenegger? How about Simon? California is a write-off, and they want Schwarzenegger to travel to help them. LOL, it doesn't get much more absurd.

How many times has Bush campaigned in California. In the last four months, once!

Good luck Senior Bush. It looks like you're going to need it. Fifty-five isn't the speed limit. It's the number of electoral votes you opted to dismiss in California.

You could have appeared all over the state that voted for Schwarzenegger 60%, but no. Well, we'll see how it plays out.

Once is enough for Arnie. More than that and the chances are good that he'll say something damaging.

Listen to you...HE SPOKE AT THE NATIONAL CONVENTION WHERE EVERYONE IN THE COUNTRY SAW HIM. It's never enough for some of you people. Do you have any idea how hard it is to Govern in the horrible state of California? He's doing the best he can.
