TIKRIT, Iraq Thanks to the Division engineers ministry of electricity and the public works teams efforts along, with the As Sulaymaniyah electric distribution ministry, the electrical shortages of the As Sulaymaniyah region have been reduced. If you have the chance to visit As Sulaymaniyah it doesnt take you long to realize that it is a region set apart from the rest of Iraq, even the electricity grid is separate. The region is dependent on hydroelectric power, which means when the rivers start to run lower electricity production is reduced. Because critical services like the hospital and the water treatment plants require constant electricity, it is the individual homes that are hurt the worse by the shortages. A solution proposed by the engineers was the installation of 15 generators capable of supplementing the current power sources. The public works team then was then able to facilitate the 1st Infantry Division funding for the purchase of the generators.
The team was also able to find and coordinate contractors who had the specialized skills needed for a project of this scale. The local As Sulaymaniyah electric workers were then able to set up to receive the generators and determine how to attach them to the distribution grid. By combining everyones skills the new generators are now being installed and can quickly fill the vital need. One of the As Sulaymaniyah officials involved was very pleased with the American effort to provide the generators. He went on to say that it was good to see us focus on our friends and allies and not just those causing problems. (Story by Spc. Brian Huckins, 411th Civil Affairs Battalion) |
