Positive Recruiting Numbers Could Signal Stronger Economy

Oct. 27, 2004 - Aggies have reason to be optimistic about their employment opportunities, as evidenced by significant increases in on-campus recruiting and an expected 11,000 interviews of Texas A&M students this fall - a number that should be among the highest number coordinated by any university career center in the nation, says Leigh Turner, executive director of the Texas A&M Career Center.      This year's numbers, when compared to those at this time last year, reveal significant increases in active recruiting companies, up 28 percent to date for this fall; resume drops, up 98 percent; and job-listing companies, up 22 percent, Turner noted.      The statistics represent a marked increase for the first time in recent years that Turner believes signals an upturn in employment across several sectors.      The increases, she explained, aren't just a product of new companies forming recruiting relationships with Texas A&M, they are also the result of existing companies ratcheting up their recruiting efforts as well - a good sign for job-seekers.      Based on recruiting numbers, Turner said, many sectors of the economy are showing improvement. Financial services, engineering firms, accounting firms, the energy and transportation sectors, consulting, computer, chemical and telecom fields as well as paper products and employment agencies have all demonstrated significant improvement, she noted.      Corroborating the recruiting surge at Texas A&M, a report by the National Association of Colleges and Employers reveals that 61 percent of surveyed employers plan to hire more new college graduates this year than they did last year, she added.

At a Uof Houston mini-MBA course I attended with a bunch of other mid-level execs we were asked if we had kids in any of the Texas colleges. All who did were at A&M.

Up to that point we had been bombarded with Aggie jokes. So one of us said- Do you know what you call an Aggie two years after he graduates?

Boss.

About a month after my son graduated he called and said the joke was wrong. He had just been appointed boss.
