The Democrats' Fantasy Island – Where they will be if they lose
National Review ^ | November 8, 2004 | John O'Sullivan

Posted on 10/27/2004 7:50:36 PM PDT by quidnunc

With the race tightening in the final stretch, Democrats have begun to believe — for the first time since the Boston convention — that Kerry really will win. Their spirits are rising, their "get out the illegals" drives in full swing, their lawyers primed and ready. But what if they lose again after all? Few Democrats have been prepared to discuss this awful prospect in public. That is partly for reasons of decorum and partly because Kerry may well win — and where would the pessimistic strategist be then? But there are occasional brave cases of men who will put their future where their mouth is.

Todd Gitlin, professor of journalism and sociology at Columbia University, is one such. Writing in a recent issue of The Washington Monthly, he explored what the Left would and should do after a Kerry defeat. His argument was, essentially, that left-wingers should imitate the Goldwater conservatives after 1964 and embark on a long march through the institutions of the Democratic party. "Many of the young go-for-broke voters," Gitlin said, "having failed to change the world in their first electoral outing, will be tempted to paint themselves into a gaudy Naderite corner … some of the far left will yield to fury, sullenness and despair. The Greens will recruit." These futile ideological gestures will make future defeats even more likely.

Others may be lured into still worse activities. Let Gitlin spell it out with the sympathetic understanding of a political ally: "I would not be surprised to see outbursts of political violence the likes of which we haven't seen since the Weather Underground of the 1970s. The commitment to marginality in much of the anti-globalization movement would take on a tang of negative logic. …

my personal theory is that the Dems will do some serious soul searching if they do lose. hopefully they will fragment and the libs will go Green or start their own while moderate dems try to rebuild somehow. I really hope that this puts them in the wilderness for at least a generation

The National Guard always wins (from past history):

Ohio NG = 5

Kent State Commies = 0

If you think the libs are shrill and out of control now, it's nothing compared to what will happen when they lose next week.

They are suffering a slow, painful death in the culture war, and they know it.

I fear for the President's safety in his next term. It will be their only option.

A two-fer-one!

Bush re-election, and the lefties further destroy their neighborhoods!

Let's face it...the radical left is either going to win, and loot our neighborhoods, or lose and loot their own.

I don't think they realize they're party is dying. They really think we are the crazy ones. They really think main stream America thinks like them. They honestly believe they are going to win this election. They are living in a fantasy world where life would be perfect if they could only get rid of us. They are for the most part spoiled children who are used to getting their way and if they don't you will see a terrible tantrum. But what is scary, they are adults with a raging hate and they really think they have this thing won. If and when they get beat, they will go into such a rage. Its not going to be pretty. I just hope by some miracle, the states have everything under control. I just remember what they tried to do in NY durring the convention. And how many of them there was.

I have fantasies of seeing disenchanted DemocRAT "political violence" being met with superior firepower - from something tripod-mounted, crew-served, belt-fed, and water-cooled.

I didn't use to have such fantasies, but with Kerry's win-at-any-cost trashing of the war effort, the (largely unreported) political violence directed by RAT operatives against the Bush campaign, and the shameless intent of the RATs to stuff ballot boxes, I have lost my patience for the RAT party.

And Gitlin, a radical of the '60's himself, will be glad to take them back to the days of "Burn, baby, burn!"

Look out - stormy weather ahead one way or another.

They could stay there and wait to be saved by Global Warming.

In 2000, the RATs at DUh were shrieking, weeping and gnashing their teeth all over the place. I downloaded several of the choicer threads and mailed them to friends as 'pick-me-up' day brighteners.

You might consider doing the same thing in a few days. Oh, and say, Christmas is close at hand! A few brightly colored pages of hardcopy cataloging the howls of the damned and the moans of dispair from the American left is sure to be a hit with any or all of the conservatives on your holiday gift list - cheers!

Which would be a really bad move given the current anti-terror posture of our government!

If Bush II wins, this race will, in retrospect, appear to echo the 1988 election.

A liberal from Massachusetts is beaten by a man named Bush. The Left blames their loss on one set of commercials that came a little too close to the truth for them. Then, 4 years later, a smooth talking liar named Clinton comes on the scene, claims to be a "moderate", is narrowly elected, and promptly reverts to hard-Left policies.

I predict a replay after this election. For Willie Horton, substitute Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. For Bill, substitute Hillary. There will, unfortunately, be no substitution for the Leftism.

some among them will be so foolish as to "take it to the streets" when they get the news that Lerch 'n' Silky lost.

after years of enduring injury from their REAL brownshirt tactics, and suffering the added insult of them accusing US of being the fascists...

good.
let them come.

If you go there and read much, you will usually see a thread about
'Where are you going to move to if * wins?
After 2 or 3 posts, they start attacking each other...
Now that I think about it, in just about every thread, they start attacking each other!
