By Steve Keating ST LOUIS (Reuters) - Boston Red Sox fans awoke on Wednesday with their impossible dream on the brink of becoming a reality.
The Red Sox will step onto Busch Stadium field tonight under a lunar eclipse needing one more victory over the St Louis cardinals to clinch their first World Series title since 1918 and put to rest forever the "Curse of the Bambino."
I'm still in shock. I'm afraid to go to sleep, only to wake up tomorrow and find it was all a dream - I was having 1986 flashbacks all night... But, I'm all better now. I got to see my Pats win not only one, but two Super Bowls, and now my Sox win the World Series.
Life is good for us long-suffering New England/Boston Fans... Life is good.
(And here's hoping that Kerry gets his wish - for him, he chose the White House over a Red Sox World Series win, so I guess no White House for him bwaaaaaahahahahahahahahaha)
Thanks... I still can't believe it. Never expected to see the Sox win in my lifetime. There's much joy in Red Sox Nation tonight!
Don't worry about the Yankees... I'm sure they'll be back big time next year... probably with a few new players from the Sox (Pedro, etc.).
Wow, thanks for the heads up on Drudge... Unfreepingbelievable is an understatement!
Parade? You want a parade? They're all over Boston and Cambridge! An hour after the game ended - every street - Comm Avenue, Mass Avenue - every car honking its horn. Everybody has spilled out of the bars and apartments. Theyre standing on the streets, cars are driving by, everybody is celebrating! I've never seen Boston like this! Everybody is behaving that I saw. I was on the phone driving down Mass Ave and a bunch of young guys came walking up either side of my car. I got a little worried because I drive a small sports car (easy to turn over). No problem, they were smiling and high fiving people through the side windows. whew! This is one happy night in Boston!
Doesn't look like it, according to baseball-reference. He came in for '87.
God Bless All Freepers from Red Sox Nation. I'm in complete shock. Probably won't go to bed tonight. Congratulations to the St. Louis Cardinals on a wonderful season. You are truly the classiest fans I've seen - and I watched virtually every Championship pitch this season.
I'm thinking of my grandfather who fought bravely in WWII and lived his whole life rooting for the Red Sox and had never seen the Red Sox hold that beautiful trophy. He's tossing back a cold one with the Babe up in Heaven right now.
They say money can't buy happiness, but Theo Epstein spent it wisely enough to bring happiness to this fan...!
CELEBRATING BIG TIME!!!! Heard on talk radio today that the parade will be Friday. Not sure what time - probably starts about eleven am - starting at Fenway and ending at City Hall Plaza. We're heading down for the festivities! God blessed the Sox - please bless our President!
My dad grew up in Lynn, Mass., and has been a lifelong Red Sox fan. He's a combat vet of WWII and the Korean War. He couldn't watch the games, according to his wife, because his angina acts up. He was sure the Red Sox would never win the World Series in his lifetime.
Hey, Dad! You were wrong!!!!
Yup... it is. But only accidentally!
In 1904 the National League winning Giants refused to play Sox!
So 100 years ago there WASN'T a W.S.!
Oh, and Theo and the Trio: RESIGN THEM ALL!!!
2005: LOCK AND RELOAD!
Well, I can officially take pride in the fact that the Red Sox have won more World Series than the Yankees have in this century!
I meant a formal Red Sox parade. I'm hearing it will be on Friday - starting at Fenway and ending at City Hall Plaza (?). Not confirmed. If you or any other Boston-area FReepers hear any details, please let me know. (We're about 2 hours south of Boston)
1+2+4+5 = 12
1+2 = 3
We all know who wore that #... right?
Great stuff! Actually, my mom is still here, thank God, and my dad had a GREAT seat in the WAY upper deck!
aaaaahahahahahaha, I like that one. YANKEES ARE THE TEAM OF THE PAST, SOX ARE THE TEAM OF THE PRESENT - AND THE FUTURE! ;-)
#3-- Dale Murphy? Harmon Killebrew?
I'm officially predicting a Red Sox victory in the '05 World Series. They'll beat Houston in 6....
Houston won't compete as closely as they did in 2004 - you can't put together a second half every year like they did this year. St. Louis is going to be formidable again next year; heard SportsCenter talking about their long-term signings. I'm hoping (against all hope) that my Dodgers might *really* compete one of these years; they overachieved this year and cannot expect their pitching to have the same first 2/3 of the season they had this year.
I'll see your official prediction with... Sox in 5 over an overdue Chicago Cubs team. ;-)
I picked Houston to win the NL back in March. I think they've great talent, but I won't be surprised if the Cards repeat. The Cubs? Baker blows out his pitchers. He did it when he was with the Giants. That's why Nenn can't lift his arm.
But we part company with the Dogs. My 2nd love is the Giants. All in all, the NL West is probably the weakest division in the NL (though the NL East looked pretty poor this year, too)....
Well I couldn't really take part in this live thread during the actual game because I work a night job at the post office, but I could hear the game on radio and during breaks we could see it on TV in the lunchroom (even gave us free snacks and soda).
The curse is lifted! Finally! The architects of the 2004
Red Sox discovered the three things that could best help
the team go all the way: pitching, pitching, and pitching.
It silenced the Angels, Yanks, and Cardinals--formidable
teams all. 8 straight post-season wins! They NEVER
trailed during the (sweep) world series! The first Boston
Red Sox world series win since--well, you know!
And now, a mention of those Red Sox figures and fans
who did not live to see this. A toast to...:
--Ted Williams
--Thomas and Jean Yawkey
--Ken Coleman and Ned Martin
--Victoria Snelgrove (killed during riot last week)
--George Herman Walker Ruth (now the Yanks and other teams can put away those pix of the Babe when the Sox are the
opponents and Fox's Sat baseball won't have to run that
"curse of the bambino" footage. The Babe was _part_ of
the 1918 team but didn't live to see another Red Sox
Series win.
And oh yes, I understand he was a Sox fan:
--A. Bartlett Giamatti
Tonight, following in the footsteps of Ken Coleman,
Red Sox radio announcer Joe Castiglione read the
famed words of the late commish:
""It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops."
