Bush breaks "silence" on missing Iraq explosives

LITITZ, United States (AFP) - Breaking his silence on missing Iraqi explosives, US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) called Democratic rival John Kerry (news - web sites)'s attacks on the subject "wild charges" levelled in desperation.

At a campaign rally in this crucial state just six days before the election, Bush said US forces were investigating the fate of the 350 tonnes of high explosives and that Kerry was irresponsibly jumping to conclusions.

"The senator is making wild charges about missing explosives," said Bush. "Think about that: The senator is denigrating the action of our troops and commanders in the field without knowing the facts."

"Unfortunately, that's part of a pattern of saying almost anything to get elected," said the president, whom Kerry has accused of incompetent war planning in the wake of media revelations that the explosives went missing.

"America is now investigating a number of possible scenarios, including that the explosives may have been moved before our troops even arrived at the site," said Bush.

"This investigation is important, and a political candidate who jumps to conclusions without knowing the facts is not the person you want as your commander in chief," said Bush.

His comments came after a top Iraqi science official said it was "impossible" that the explosives could have been smuggled out of a military site south of Baghdad before the regime fell last year.

The UN nuclear watchdog agency this week said the explosives went missing from a weapons dump some time after Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s regime was toppled in April 2003 by the US-led invasion.

The president gave a new polish to a well-worn campaign attack based on Kerry's assertion that preemptive US military action ought to be able to pass a "global test" of credibility.

"I want to remind the American people: if Senator Kerry had his way, we would still be taking our global test, Saddam Hussein would still be in power, he would control all those weapons and explosives, and could share them with out terrorist enemies," Bush charged.

I think it's possible that Kerry has really walked into this trap, which could last another 5 days.

Kerry should have spent the last week talking about domestic issues... he stupidly, brazenly thought he could play on the President's turf.

We need 527s up with commercials pointing out that Kerry has a lifetime pattern of trashing American troops.

Satellite photos from the Pentagon showing a long caravan of transports carrying the WMD's to Syria before we even landed would be nice.

..and now the enemy (DEMS and MSM) have given us the REASON to show these photos, and the REASON to demand Syria relinquish these weapons. After all, the DEMS are admitting SOMEONE stole them.

The CHESS game isn't over, but the other side has lost a lot of pieces.

Couple their own admissions of guilt with satellite photos and throw in the kitchen sink. Burn, NYT, Burn.

"Also on CNN yesterday they said that before the news media could get the story on the air they had all been flooded with emails by the Kerry organization...this was obvisouly one of Kerry's October surprises....."

You mean this was not an independent story from the news media, but an orchestrated campaign with the DNC? /sarcasm

but there is not a person on this planet who can convince me why this should not have been said on the same day that Kerry was able to get the media to repeat his charges... unchallenged on every conceivable news outlet.

Think again.

Had Bush responded on day 1, it would have been "a desperate President Bush went into damage control mode..." It would have been worse by far than anything JF'nK has been saying.

Since then, however, the story has been widely discredited, the NYT got scalded by a "false letter," CBS News has been revealed, once again, as a partisan anti-Bush organization, and Kerry has stupidly persisted in the attacks, even though it's clear he doesn't know the facts.

And thus Bush has been handed a very large stick to club them with.

I'd say that a little patience has yielded tremendous rewards.... I would like to see them quickly turn out an ad on this, though. It would be incredibly damaging to F'n.

this will definitely get a response that mentions his summer on a speedboat in viet nam . . .

Predicted response: "I won't have my patriotism questioned by a man who wouldn't serve when his country called. I won't stand for it".

which is always comic, because he just did "stand for it".

The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread?

When evildoers came upon me to devour my flesh,

My adversaries and my enemies, they stumbled and fell.

Though a host encamp against me, my heart will not fear;

Though war arise against me in spite of this I shall be confident.

Psalm 27:1-3

The Lord is in control and he will show his power once again. This is the best part of the game when it is in the 4th quarter and 2 mins left. That is when the juices start flowing and the fun begins and this is getting fun. GW is in a great position and one more long play and the game is over.

This election has been truly historic in so many ways, but the most powerful transparency is the exposure of the collusion between the media and the Rat Party. There is no longer a pretense of fairness left in the Stone-age press and have removed any ethics they had left from their reporting to become a 24/7 attack ad for Yaawn Cut & Ran Kerry.

DespeRat times call for despeRat measures and the Libs are on the precipice of extinction as we have known them. Rather than search out the truth, PravdABDNC has become destortors of the truth for the campaign. The forged AWOL documents was the beginning and now we have the phony explosive charges. We now find that the explosives were most likely never in the bunkers when our troops arrived and they refuse to print the truth. The Liberals are always more than eager to smear our Military and CIA to get at our President. For Libs that is a two-for. Now watch them try to drag out the Uranium scare or some other nebulous Monday Morning Armchair General attack.

This is how devoid of soul the Liberal Establishment has become. Rather than search for the news or provide a dialogue for important issues they have become Michael Mooreons distorting and framing GW with ridiculous charges. He has become the sloven standard bearer that the Old Media has lowered itself to.

We as a Country needed to have this revealed. We needed to have a clear delineation of how valid the information we have entering our homes and Country. Just as the Enron scandal was a blight on the investors in the short run, cleaning out the charlatans provided an important valuable service in the long run. It showed investors who to avoid and began a thorough evaluation of the accounting practices in industry. Cleaning out the Old York Times and the DNCBS of their charlatans will be a valuable service in the future for knowing who to believe and who to ignore, especially during these dangerous times.

This election has been an eye opening election for the entire Country. It is now crystal clear who and what we can and can’t trust. Unfortunately for the Stone-age press, they overplayed their hand and are headed for the Bomb Bunkers of History.

Pray for W and Our Election

The point is that we are in the final week. We are playing in fast-motion now.

Bush should not go off half-cocked, no. But why can't the president be ahead of the curve on these. We here at Free Republic knew this was bogus...

...Rush, Hannity, NRO, etc, etc.

Our troops got there ONE day after the fall of Baghdad. Kerry has been talking about the "ammo dump" claim since the first debate (Oct. 8).

Thanks to the one sided help by the MSM, it is just "common knowledge" that Bush(?!?) screwed up the war. This lie gets played and played and played... Solidifies in peoples minds, and any rebuttal that happens a few days later just sounds like the administration trying to cover their ass.

I don't think enough voters listen to Rush, read Free Republic, and are generally weary of the media enough to keep these types of lies from damaging the President in terms of V O T E S.

One week left. You have to be ahead of the news cycle... not reacting to it.

I will tell you one thing...when I compare this President and his administration and the dedication of the troops in field in Afghanistan and Iraq....I feel cheated

Thanks to Kerry and that bass turd Walter Cronkite who in '68' said the war was unwinnable the heartland began to doubt our mission...And when the 'most trusted man in America tells you...you are fighting a losing battle, and even the folks in middle America begin to doubt, it didn't take long for that poison to infect 19 yr. old soldiers...

Thanks to these traitors.. I began to doubt to as did a lot of guys in my platoon...never in a million years did I suspect I was being lied to by the main stream media...regarded as noble men of truth and fact...The seeds of rebellion began to germinate..just as the traitors had planned.

How great it would have been to have had man like GW Bush as our commander in chief during the Vietnam War.... and accountability in the media...I believe we would have had a decisive victory...Vietnam would be free and our most grateful ally..Neither Cambodia or Laos would have gone through the horror they did ...(The Killing Fields)...

Vietnam Veterans would not have born the burdens imposed upon us by the left wing main stream media, Hollywood, the music industry and the Universities...their poison choking vines would have found no fertile ground.

Most of us have vowed to never again let what happened to us happen to our children or the Veterans coming home from OUR war on terror...perhaps this is the only good thing those rats did...give us a lesson on what never to allow to happen again to our troops...our family..our nation.

When I listened to GW speak near my home yesterday...I was uplifted...and a little sad for myself and my brothers who I fought alongside.....that we did not know for ourselves (at least I didn't) the pride of fighting for such clearly stated objectives and for a man who knows how to get the job done and is 100% supportive of the troops in the field and their families...

If the military would have taken me...I would have run right from GW's speech to the recruiter.

George Washington- George Patton- George Bush

The all time greatest Georges IMO

When you need to get the job done that old sage is right on the money...

Let George do it..

Can't get in front of a news cycle that the MSM prefabracates.

Look at what happend to rathergate. Bush held his tounge and let it all unwind in kerry's face.

The newscycle is not 24 hours anymore, and not constrained to televison.

Not only conservatives read bolgs. Bush is doing just what he should do.

In Baghdad, Mohammed al-Sharaa, who heads the Iraqi science ministry's site monitoring department, said "it is impossible that these materials could have been taken from this site before the regime's fall." He said he and other officials had been ordered a month earlier to insure that "not even a shred of paper left the sites."

Um, maybe the regime was a little too busy the month before it's fall to follow up on that order. The reports from the scene when the troops arrived said the explosives were not there. It is pretty hard to miss 380 tons of anything, even if you "didn't look very hard" to quote msnbc...

Welcome to Free Republic!

r9etb,

You would be correct if every voter spent as much time on the internet, reading articles on Free Republic, tracking down the truth, and distrusting the main stream media.

Unfortunately, we are a minority. Many people (read, "voters") still just blindly trust the media. If Bush had this statement ready to go on day one, many would have been aware of how laughable the claim is.

Bush's rebuttal WILL NOT get as much coverage by the MSM as did the initial bogus charges.

strictly speaking, these explosives are "dual use" substances, since they could be used to detonate a nuclear warhead, OR in, say, coal mining.

isn't kerry slitting his own throat?
