SCRANTON - U.S. Sen. Zell Miller, D-Georgia, who is backing GOP President Bush, appealed to about 200 supporters at a morning rally in Scranton. Miller, who gave the keynote speech at the National Republican Convention this summer, touched on socially conservative issues such as supporting gun rights and tax cuts but opposing abortion and flag-burning.
"I have never seen a presidential candidate of either party who was as far out of touch, who was as far out of the mainstream with the average American, as is John Kerry," Miller said. "There is a huge gap between what this man thinks and what you and I think. He's out there in the land of Oz."
Residents of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre said they expect the Nov. 2 election to split the region between Bush and Kerry.
In Scranton, city Democratic Committeewoman Ann Marie Gowarty said she plans to vote for the Republican - even if it means resigning from her party post.
"John Kerry is running with a lot of bad issues, and I have to vote with the issues," said Gowarty, 56. "I've been a Democrat all my life, but this election has been the biggest decision-maker for me. My whole family is Democrat, but just talking to them about the issues - abortion, the war in Iraq - we have to support our president."
Strong points made in clear, simple language, delivered firm and confidently. Zell does a great job.
Hey cool. I lived up there when I was 16. First time away from home and I worked in a chocolate factory called Eddyleon's. Hated the area though. Was too used to the parallel roads in Florida. It's all windy curves up there :(
It boggles the mind that Zell and Carter were both governors of Georgia.
Excellent!
"[Captain Obvious] said they expect the Nov. 2 election to split the region between Bush and Kerry. "
"It boggles the mind that Zell and Carter were both governors of Georgia."
But it sure helps explain why Zell is over on our side now.
I was thinking last night that the Lord works in mysterious ways. We were deeply saddened when Sen Coverdell died 4 years ago and was replaced with Miller. We wish Coverdell had lived but since he passed away, at least some good came of it. We got Sen Miller on our side and he just might help tip the election to GWB.
I lived in the scranton area most of my life before <moving here to Indiana. It is a very strong pro-life area. Ann Marie Gowarty was a parishioner of mine when i was in West Scranton back in the 70's. It was like a name out of the past when i saw the post.
Fow News just reported that Zell is going to Ohio with Bush on Air Force One.
My sons great grandparents lived in Scranton, I believe all their lives. They were wonderful Christian people. He was a banker I believe. You probably knew him.
Amen! Welcome home, sister.
He's the man. I have aquaintenances that are dems think he is such a traitor.
He has found the truth. Unlike the other dem bafoons.
He is more than likely the old Democratic Party, this new leftist wing, is the socialist communist democrats. They have hijacked the Democratic Party.
true.
Now Fox is reporting that Zell is also going to Michigan with Bush.
I'll be in Dayton tomorrow with the wife. Can't wait to see Dubya, Zell, and others -- maybe Ah-Nold?
