Schwarzenegger to stump with Bush in Columbus, Ohio Friday (now official)

The Republican party's star act, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites), will stump alongside US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) on Friday in the battleground state of Ohio, officials said.

The movie star politician's spokesman Rob Stutzman, said Tuesday that the moderate Republican would join Bush in Columbus, the state capital of one of the most bitterly fought races in the November 2 presidential election.

The announcement that the moderate Republican would finally go out to bat for Bush put an end to months of speculation during which "Terminator" star Schwarzenegger has been vague about his stumping intentions.

Stutzman said the Bush campaign would announce the details of exactly where and when Schwarzenegger would launch his much-vaunted double act with the president in Columbus.

The hugely popular former Mr Universe bodybuilder and action hero is seen as a Republican Party big-gun just days ahead of what is shaping up to be one of the tightest US elections in years.

Bush's campaign is hoping that some of the brawny "govern-ator" star power will rub off on their candidate during the campaign outing that will come just four days ahead of the vote.

While Schwarzenegger appeared at the Republican convention in New York in late August, the socially liberal Schwarzenegger has largely kept his distance from the conservative Bush with whom he has little in common.

The two men are diametrically opposed on central policy issues including abortion, stem cell research, gun control and gay marriage, which Schwarzenegger supports and Bush strongly opposes.

Schwarzenegger's campaign foray comes after Democratic contender for the White House John Kerry (news - web sites) invoked his party's star attraction, popular former president Bill Clinton (news - web sites), to boost his polls chances.

Clinton, who is recovering from heart surgery, jumped into the campaign on Monday in key swing states of Pennsylvania and Florida to urge voters to pick Kerry for president in a week's time.

It will be good to see the Terminator tell Kerry: "hasta la vista baby"

Note the language on the differences between Arnold and Bush, but nothing about differences between Kerry and Clinton (and there are some).

It just really depresses me sometimes that these things always, always cut just one way.

I don't know about you, but when I heard that he might not go I wrote an e-mail to Arnold and also called his office. The guy on the phone said he'd received numerous phone calls regarding the issue. Maybe our input does matter afterall. Now I need to e-mail and say thank you!

Well, I never had a doubt he'd appear. The logistics of this need to be worked in advance, the talk was all show to build hype.

If Arnold Schwarzenegger, aka.GovRino, was a loyal Reagan Republican, he would have been campaigning for the President at every available opportunity and not wait for the last week to help in the reelection effort for Bush-Cheney.

If Arnold Schwarzenegger, aka.GovRino, was a loyal Reagan Republican, he would have been campaigning for the President at every available opportunity and not wait for the last week to help in the reelection effort for Bush-Cheney.

Arnold's excuse about having to work in California is risible. First off, it's a smack at every other Republican governor who's out busting their hump for Bush. Second, Ronald Reagan, his supposed role model, managed to campaign for Nixon in 1968 and 1972 while he was governor of California. Was Reagan somehow failing to do his job?

Arnold has been remarkably self-serving during this campaign. When it's all on the line is when loyalty counts the most. And Arnold's not counted for much on that score. Rudy, on the other hand, has been a tireless and loyal Bush ally.

Arnold has been a huge disappointment in this campaign. I was a big fan, but this has soured me on the guy.

Thanks for taking the time to email and phone Arnold's office. Sometimes you never know if what we are doing has any effect on anything. But I believe it does and we need to keep on doing it until November 2. Thanks again bethtopaz!

Arnold Schwarzengger is no loyal Republican. In fact, GovRino has been an utter failure all around.

I don't care for liberal Republicans, but at least Rudi Giuliani has been out campaigning from coast to coast, in an all out effort to get Bush-Cheney reelected. Same for Democratic Senator Zell Miller. Even Democrat Ed Koch has been out campaigning for Bush.

Schwarzenegger has been MIA!

you are welcome! also, i just replied to ken mehlman's e-mail. I told him i had taken him up on his challenge to persuade two people in two weeks to vote for bush. I am trying to do two a day. I talk to anyone i get a chance to talk to = wear my W'04 button and surprisingly get good responses from it - even had a young kid ask me where he could get one - i gave him mine, then went to the davis,ca rep hdqtrs and got 3 more (two in case i got asked again). he also said it was good to see someone wearing one and that he's sick of the liberals. we were just standing in line at an arco am/pm. HE MADE MY DAY! Hey, sometimes i think, dmw, how did the patriots get the revolutionary war going -- it must have this way - one on one, day after day, spreading the passion! Go W!!!

Did anyone else notice the comments "moderate" and "socially liberal" when describing Arnold? It's funny, I don't think I've ever seen the media mention Kerry,Kennedy, or Edwards as liberal.

It's like what EagleClaw said, these labels only apply to Republicans
