Bush feels the heat as rural heartland goes cool
Telegraph UK ^ | 10/26/04 | Alec Russel

President George W Bush campaigned up and down a small rural stretch of the heartland yesterday, desperately seeking to shore up his position in a once safe region where Republicans are registering the first prickles of concern about his record - and his chances.

With just a week to go before voting, Mr Bush focused his fire on Wisconsin and Iowa, two mid-western states that have become pivotal to his chances. He lost both narrowly to Al Gore in 2000 but now badly needs to win them as an insurance policy, given the state of play in Ohio and Florida, two of the three key swing states, where he is in a dead heat with his rival.

Sitting on the banks of the Mississippi, the focus of a blitz of campaigning by the two presidential candidates, two Republican businessmen in their mid-30s aired the anxieties that go to the heart of jitters among Bush supporters.

"People are worried about Iraq," said Eric Dragne, in a display of candour remarkable in a partisan climate that tends to allow for no self-doubt on either side. "Many people here know people who have lost their lives."

"Did Snow actually say that? Why would the dems give up on Florida?"

He said it but it was an rumor that looks false. Kerry going to FL for several days according to NRO's The Kerry Spot:

KERRY PULLING OUT OF FLORIDA? A PREMATURE CALL, AT BEST [10/26 09:55 PM]

I understand this evening that columnist Tony Snow said on Bill O'Reilly this evening that the Kerry campaign was conceding Florida and focusing its resources on shoring up Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Checked with my guy on the Kerry campaign. He said Kerry is currently scheduled to spend Thursday night, all of Friday, and Friday night in Florida.

So for now, I don't think there's anything to Snow's rumor. It seems rather late to pull resources, anyway. The ads, the volunteers, the resources... they are where they are.

He obviously hasn't seen the Bush+20 lead he has in Texas, AL, GA, SD.....support gone?...excuse me?

My gut tells me Bush may just have a major land-slide, like Reagan had when all the polls were saying he and Carter were too close to call.

Well....

Look, I have more faith in Snow than Geraghty. In fact, well, I guess I'll save my rant about how NRO has really been pathetic recently; they actually started talking about real issues at some point today instead of lauding Derbyshire (or is that Derbyshire lauding himself?) for his math wizardry and asking Jonah how his dog is doing....wait, I promised to save my rant.

anyway, we'll see.But Geraghty strikes me as a pretty soft guy who's ready to buy anything. Snow is soft in his own right, but he's still alot more sophisticated than ole Jim.

It was over 80 degrees in the heartland yesterday. No offense but Wisconsin is not the heartland.

And Bush is doing great except for Chicago ruining Illinois.

I know but if Kerry scheduled to do some straight day campaigning this week and The Big Dog could be heading there any day, then I'd say the DNC hasn't given up on FL. It doesn't make strategic sense to give up in this chess game of getting 270 EV's in the easiest way (or blocking your opponent from getting his).

Kerry must have changed his plans, because I don't think FL was in the mix for him orignally to visit this week. But then again, that may have been Ohio that I am thinking of.

I hope Snow is correct, but I doubt Kerry would concede FL especially since he has sent down Bubba, Carter, Jesse, and Edwards to prepare a welcome for him later in the week. (see previous posts in this thread to find out Kerry's schedule for the week)

As far as I am concerned, he can send down all the lib riff raff he wants-it just makes Bush look even better.
