NBC BLOWS A HOLE IN NY TIMES' EXPLOSIVES STORY (KERRY SPOT)
The Kerry Spot, NRO ^ | 10/25/04 | Jim miclacevski

KERRY SPOT

Jim Miklaszewski of NBC News pretty much dismantled the New York Times attack on behalf of Kerry today.

NBC News: Miklaszewski: “April 10, 2003, only three weeks into the war, NBC News was embedded with troops from the Army's 101st Airborne as they temporarily take over the Al Qakaa weapons installation south of Baghdad. But these troops never found the nearly 380 tons of some of the most powerful conventional explosives, called HMX and RDX, which is now missing. The U.S. troops did find large stockpiles of more conventional weapons, but no HMX or RDX, so powerful less than a pound brought down Pan Am 103 in 1988, and can be used to trigger a nuclear weapon. In a letter this month, the Iraqi interim government told the International Atomic Energy Agency the high explosives were lost to theft and looting due to lack of security. Critics claim there were simply not enough U.S. troops to guard hundreds of weapons stockpiles, weapons now being used by insurgents and terrorists to wage a guerrilla war in Iraq.” (NBC’s “Nightly News,” 10/25/04)

If Jill Abramson, managing editor of the New York Times, had a shred of concern over her paper's reputation for getting the facts right never mind objectivity or fairness, she would be running the correction - or at least this blatantly contradictory information - in the giant headline font and above-the-fold location that today's story got. But I guess the interest in echoing the sentiments of Maureen Dowd is more important than getting it right at the Old Gray Lady.

At the Pentagon, an official who monitors developments in Iraq said U.S.-led coalition troops had searched Al-Qaqaa in the immediate aftermath of the March 2003 invasion and confirmed that the explosives, under IAEA seal since 1991, were intact. Thereafter, the site was not secured by U.S. forces, the official said, also speaking on condition of anonymity.

Is anyone surprised that the N.Y. Times slanted this story?
I knew that story was bunk when I saw the reports. Those explosives were moved before the war ever began and there is no telling where that cache ended up. My guess is that it's either buried out in the desert or in Syria.
Just another example of the MSM and the N.Y. Times doing what they can to slant their stories in favor of Kerry and tar Bush with all kind of blame and charges.
So much for any more pretense of objective journalism.

"Initial DNC spin on Wolf Blitzer CNN: Still bad for administration for making Saddam disperse explosives, rather than safely have them stored. Eeeegads!"

This confirms my prediction in post 456

I love this part:

Dem vp hopeful John Edwards blasted Bush for not securing the explosives: "It is reckless and irresponsible to fail to protect and safeguard one of the largest weapons sites in the country. And by either ignoring these mistakes or being clueless about them, George Bush has failed. He has failed as our commander in chief; he has failed as president."

A top Bush official e-mailed DRUDGE late Monday: "Let me get this straight, are Mr. Kerry and Mr. Edwards now saying we did not go into Iraq soon enough? We should have invaded and liberated Iraq sooner?"

Developing...

Brit made it a point to say we don't know when it come up missing...before or after we got there. [para.] Now we know it was before.

Bet we don't get this many reports debunking this story tomorrow.

But the Local NBC News 10 Did NOT lead off the News tonight about the Kerry/Clinton Rally ... it was about 4 stories into the broadcast and they barely talked about the Rally today

Anyone have a video of the NBC Nightly News report? This would be more useful for spreading the word.

This from the AP 4/2/2003
Kerry starting to get that glazed look in his eye.

Notice all the references to possible WMD's. I wonder what the follow-up was on some of this stuff. I can't seem to find anything.

"As the military advances closer to Baghdad, signs of Iraqi chemical preparedness are multiplying, although there is still no conclusive evidence Saddam Hussein's regime possesses weapons of mass destruction.

On Friday, troops at a training facility in the western Iraqi desert came across a bottle labeled "tabun" -- a nerve gas and chemical weapon Iraq is banned from possessing.

Closer to Baghdad, troops at Iraq's largest military industrial complex found nerve agent antidotes, documents describing chemical warfare and a white powder that appeared to be used for explosives.

U.N. weapons inspectors went repeatedly to the vast al Qa Qaa complex -- most recently on March 8 -- but found nothing during spot visits to some of the 1,100 buildings at the site 25 miles south of Baghdad.

Col. John Peabody, engineer brigade commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, said troops found thousands of 2-by-5-inch boxes, each containing three vials of white powder, together with documents written in Arabic that dealt with how to engage in chemical warfare.

Initial reports suggest the powder is an explosive, but tests are still being done, a senior U.S. official said. If confirmed, it would be consistent with what the Iraqis say is the plant's purpose, producing explosives and propellants.

I want to know if this is what Kerry was alluding to in the 1st debate??? When he talked about not protecting the nuclear site??? So he had a heads up before the Bush administration?

And someone please tell me what Kerry's repeated joining of his hands in front of him and doing a little bow thing means??? It seems really weird to me that he does that and it reminds me of Ho Chi Mihn! The man is evil, I tell ya!
