Conventional wisdom has long held that the key to winning the presidential election is to take Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
President Bush says it's not so simple.
In an exclusive interview with ABC News' Charles Gibson, airing on "World News Tonight" and "Good Morning America," Bush notes the field of states that could help decide the election may be bigger than casual observers believe.
"I wouldn't discount Michigan," Bush says. "I wouldn't discount the influence of Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota and New Mexico. I think this race is a non-predictable race. I think people like to boil it down to one or two states. I think you're gonna find there's a lot of interesting states not considered to be in play."
Both Bush and his Democratic opponent, John Kerry, are scheduled to campaign in Michigan before Election Day on Nov. 2, and both campaigns are still throwing advertising dollars into the state.
According to ABC News' political unit, 11 states, including Michigan, still appear to be "battleground" states. They are Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada, New Mexico and New Hampshire.
Bush says he has no intention of slowing down his sprint through the most contested states before the finish.
"The only thing that I know is to keep campaigning and working hard and telling people what I believe and where I'm gonna lead the country," he says. "I love to get out and campaign. Yesterday in Florida we had a fantastic day, four stops and big crowds, and I like to tell people what's on my mind and what I'm gonna do."

They have strong GOP roots, and if take win both of them, F'n will need a miracle to win.
Don't let ABC, AP, CBS, CNN, FOX, NBC
give the election to Kerry like they did Gore

I wish the President wouldn't give interviews to Charles Gibson. He hates the President.
If Hawaii, Michigan, are in play, this could get interestng for Bush. Kerry's doing everything he can to defend Blue states. Bush has pushed him in a corner and Kerry's resorted to looking like Elmer Fudd in Ohio.
We need FL and Ohio, if we lose one of them we are in trouble, if we lose both we are sunk.
While it is good to have some focus on the smaller states, I really think this election will be decided in FL and Ohio. We win both of them I can't see Kerry winning.
Nor would I. Looking forward to seeing him again on Wednesday. Again.
Kerry cannot win if we win both.
Let's just win both so we don't have to worry about doing a bunch of other mathematical calculations with these other states. :-)
For the first time in weeks I really believe the Poodle and Silky Pony are goin' down! GO BUSH/CHENEY GO!!!
I really hope Bush wins Michigan, if only to deliver a much-deserved eye poke to Michael Moore.
The "Curse" is still alive and well, it is simply shifting from guys with red sox to guys with no balls.
No disrespect intended, but I think this will be an entirely different election. I think at least 3-4 states will behave differently than 2000. I hope this favors Bush (gives him a bigger edge), but it's just not a replay of the last election. No way. This is 2004. It's a new game, not the last one.
I believe Flint, Michigan hometown newspaper endorsed GW, as have many of the metropolitan papers in Ohio. I'd love to see a video of Moore drooling in his closet following GW's win on November 2nd.
You are so right. Everyone is so afraid of a repeat they cant see in front of their noses. Cell phones are really skewing the polls. Bush is farther ahead than most think. Cross your fingers and prey for our Prez!!
Heh, I may be a "kid" but gimme a break please don't put me in the Clinton crowd. Why don't you kick my dog while you are at it....
Didn't know you were a kid ;-)
Left off my smiley again. Hope you weren't offended just me being my usual wise a$$ self.
