LOS ANGELES Movie-goers have no grudges against Sarah Michelle Gellar (search). But they apparently have a beef with Ben Affleck (search).
Gellar's fright flick "The Grudge" got a jump on Halloween with a $40 million opening weekend to debut at No. 1, while Affleck delivered a holiday turkey on "Surviving Christmas," his critically drubbed comedy coming in at No. 7 with just $4.5 million.
The animated "Shark Tale," the top movie for three straight weekends, slipped to second place with $14.3 million, lifting its total to $136.9 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

"Surviving Christmas" did barely better than Affleck's notorious 2003 bomb "Gigli," which had a $3.8 million opening weekend.
The movie stars Affleck as a lonely guy who hires a pretend family for the holidays. Critics trashed the movie, whose release was delayed a year to avoid bumping up against Affleck's thriller "Paycheck" during the 2003 holiday season.
Executives at DreamWorks, which released "Surviving Christmas," were unavailable for comment Sunday, a spokeswoman said.

Hope Ben invested his money well.
Just from the trailers, this film is disturbing and mean spirited. A bomb.
Hahaha...very good.
I saw the trailer for this one and you could tell it was going to be awful. Looks like they tried to be like Christmas Vacation but the comedy timing looked terrible with all of the scenes. This guys career as a Hollywood actor could be over very soon.
ben affleck is box office poison.
He should have stuck with Booty Lopez.
You mean he had a career?
Wonder if there is any correlation with Ben being a big lib while Buffy is a sorta coservative.
Maybe has-Ben can ask F'n for a Cabinet position. I hear that there is a Louis XV cabinet in one of the mansions that needs polishing.
He was a huge star for about a year or two afterwards, then his career was somewhat mediocre for the next 10 years (Waterworld, Wyatt Earp, The Postman) until he redeemed himself with Open Range in 2003.
Just my opinion, of course.
I couldn't care less about Affleck, but I feel bad for Christina Applegate (one of his co-stars).
She's still my dream girl!
And I think it pretty much destroyed Matt Damon's career.
Yeah, I've noticed. Almost everything he's touched for the past 3 or 4 years, besides Sum of All Fears and Daredevil, has turned to sh*t at the box office. And even those two films were moderate successes when you consider the production costs.
From Ben Affleck's journal:
Note to self - spend less time campaigning for Kerry and more time considering choice of movie scripts. A few more like that and I'll be the next Ed Begley Jr.
Maybe it's just that people are starting to demand a bit of talent in their actors, and not just pretty faces enhanced with lots of Botox. (I can dream, anyway).
What is there to say?
Carreer? What does he do for a living?
