A Surprising Endorsement

A Surprising Endorsement

Readers know just how little little I think of newspaper endorsements for a presidential candidate. But there’s one endorsement worth noting: The Sioux Falls Argus-Leader is endorsing President Bush.

Those familiar with familiar with South Dakota politicsSouth Dakota politics know just how much of a Democrat front the Argus-Leader is. This surprising endorsement is perhaps a sign that the political winds in South Dakota are blowing so much to the right that the newspaper endorsed President Bush to avoid losing readers. That is, of course, bad news for Tom Daschle in his desperate fight for re-election.

UPDATE: Another surprising endorsement, by the Austin-American Statesman.Austin-American Statesman. I graduated from UT Austin. My old stomping grounds are among the most rabidly liberal-Democrat environs in the country. That the Statesman would endorse the president is truly stunning.

I guess the Argus-Leader and the Austin Statesman cannot endorse a communist and an ambulance chaser. Even they have their limits.

Good to hear. How's that Thune/Dasshole race going anyway?

I have had this feeling from the beginning that Thune would beat Daschle. I base this on nothing other than gut and how close Thune came last time to winning a S.D. Senate seat. PowerLine has a post on this race today linking to this great Thune ad.

If I thought the Democrats would not be engaging in massive voter fraud in South Dakota, as it appears they did in the last Senate race, I would have no problem predicting a Thune win. Like I said before, though, the polls show a tight race and my belief that

Thune will win comes mainly from a gut feeling and from the belief that Bush at the top of the ticket will help Thune close the deal. Power Line also points out that it is not too late to send some money Thune’s way. Follow the latest in the race here.

"The Capitol" here in Annapolis, in the heart of the Demokrat Republik of Maryland, also endorsed President Bush this morning.

To me, newspaper endorsements mean little more than exposing the level of demonrat bias each particular paper has. Those who endorse john fraudulent kerry are 110% demonrat, those who endorse Bush are merely 99% demonrat.

Actually could give them cover, in a state that is easy Bush. Now they can endorse Daschle, and look fair and balanced.

WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, back to my "Would you like to have Thune/Diedtrich/Bush campaign signs to put in your yard?" call list.

Mr. RR and I are both poll watchers on election day. "I see dead people", and promise I won't let them vote.

If the Argus-Leader were really endorsing W, they would have also endorsed Thune. They're just trying to save Daschle's bacon. W is going to carry SD with a huge margin with or without the endorsement of the Argus-Leader. They want to make sure W doesn't give Thune some coattails.

There's some gamesmanship and strategizing to newspaper endorsements. The liberal papers routinely sacrifice some endorsements that are givens in order to "build capital" for the tighter, more competitive races, all of which they go with liberal endorsements. It's a very consistent strategy. They figure that gullible readers will think "Well they endorsed Bush so..." and go ahead with their other recommendations on legislative races and especially on the murkier area of judicial elections. Why waste political and business capital on endorsing something who hasn't a prayer at winning in your area? Why not instead put all your capital into the liberals that actually have a shot at winning. So, some endorsements mean nothing. And some non-endorsements mean nothing. So what if the NYTimes endorses Bush. They are expected to do it, and NY will go for Kerry anyway. The only presidential endorsements that matter are at the newspapers in the toss-up states. See which way those lean and you can draw some real conclusions.
