Zogby/Maine Sunday Telegram poll: Kerry 50, Bush 39, Nader 1

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- The Zogby International poll, conducted for the Maine Sunday Telegram, gives Kerry 50 percent of the vote, with Bush getting 39 percent. Independent Ralph Nader got just over one percent. The poll also suggested that two statewide referendums are headed for defeat on the November second ballot. Fifty-nine percent of the respondents said they would vote against a referendum to cap property taxes at one percent of a property's assessed value. Twenty-eight percent said they were for the measure, and 13 percent were unsure. On a referendum that would ban bear-baiting in the state, 54 percent said they opposed the referendum with 37 percent in favor. Zogby conducted the telephone poll last Wednesday and Thursday, using 402 randomly selected voters who identified themselves as likely to vote. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus five percentage points.

Yea - doesn't seem right. With all the defense contractors in the state. I'm not buying this (as a former Mainer).

I live in Maine and I can tell you that this poll is complete bunk. Look at the small sample and the large margin of error.

The 2nd Congressional District is still in play as far as the one electoral vote from it goes, Maine can divide its EV's and will do so this time.

I wonder who Zogby calls, the dead or people in the mill towns?

Agreed..

402 people in a sample, even for a small state like Maine, is ridiculously low..

You need atleast 750+ to have a reliable poll IMO.

As a present Mainer, believe it. The liberal Media and teacher's unions in Maine have done their joibs well. This is their dividend. The people lose. Oh yeah, the Tax Cap proposal is hopelessly lost too. "Save Our Schools" signs are everywhere. 69 cents of evereyone of my Property Tax dollars go to the government schools. Bush was never in play here. Oh, but we got Snowe & Collins!! Can I swear here??

Maine is one of those idiotic states that splits their electors based on who wins the congressional districts. Why the people of Maine think this is a great idea I don't understand? It makes them less important in the electoral college.

Too bad. You could be right. I know a lot of people in Southern Maine where I use to live who are in fact libs (my whole family too in western foothills). I can tell you that my present location (Vermont) is almost as bad as Maine regarding taxes (Prop tax went up over 40%).

I'll be looking to the mid west to retire. Preferably, a "red " state!

Hard to believe they would vote against limiting property taxes. I guess they have been brainwashed by the liberal mantra that "more money equals better schools". The foisting of this tired old propaganda on the public is why I despise the teachers unions. It is always in conjunction with smaller classes, which means less work for more pay. When I was in elementary school in the 60's, my classes averaged between 40 and 50 students, yet one teacher, with no assistants or teacher's helpers, provided us with a much better education than the 18-22 student classes preferred today.

Right you are. The closer you come to five percent the more unreliable the poll. At five percent the poll should be deep-sixed -- and Zogby knows it. Thus, one can only assume that this was distributed for propaganda purposes.

Hard to believe they would vote against limiting property taxes.

The question is, are property owners voting for more property taxes? Or non-owners? I wonder what the percentages are.

Strange...
How does Nader consistenly get 1 percent of the vote no matter WHO does the polling.. No matter the area or polling plan Nader gets 1 percent.. wether in New York, San Francisco or Texas or even Alaska, the most republican of states. Nader gets 1 percent... STRANGE... Forget the other two candidates this Nader thing is very Hmmm, well lets say, odoriferous..

Surely in some places Nader would draw ZERO.. unless some people just pick Nader as a protest choice because the poll'ees dislike both candidates.. Like me, ALL my votes for President have been protest votes since 1992... I almost voted for Peerot in 92' but the little rascal bitch slapped me back to reality when he QUIT... I've been careful ever since.. Must be people in mental insititutions voting for Nader.. thats it.. Do we really have that many in mental institutions ?

Believe it. Maine has been taken over (just like VT and Southern NH) by a bunch of liberal losers and career welfare people looking for handouts. Maine will soon crash and be the first state to go bankrupt or will become part of Quebec.

Maine is the second poorest state, after Mississippi. They have bankrupted themselves with hare-brained Liberal give-aways and entitlements. Maine went out of its way to invite-in indigent and uneducated Asians who immediately became lifetime welfare recipients.

Voters' solution? Elect Kerry so he can turn-on the federal money tap (i.e. your and my tax money).

I surly hope not. I love Maine - it is a beautiful state. After four years in VT, I don't think ME is as liberal as VT (believe me). It's hard to imagine that the unions are bigger than the working class. Welfare is also big too, agreed, but who would want that lifestyle? I just can not figure it out.
