Cardinal James Aloysius Hickey, 84, a champion of orthodoxy in church dogma and a compassionate shepherd of the area's half million Roman Catholics while head of the Washington Archdiocese for 20 years, died this morning at a nursing home in Washington.

His ceremony installing him as a Cardinal was on the date of my wedding. I worked in the Archdiocese of Washingont under Cardinal Hickey for many years until I started raising a family. He was a good man.
Cardinal Hickey was a steadfast Roman Catholic priest who in my view was kind to everyone. I remember working at the time during the Bishop Marino saga and it was horrible but I will further share that if that Bishop ever returned to Washington he would have been forgiven and accepted back. He was a kind gentle soul and the woman in question has quite a history. There are many who do not believe that a relationship ever happened.
