Prosecutor says GOP candidate’s divorce records obtained by opponent’s campaign

BATH, N.Y. (AP) — Sealed divorce records alleging a Republican candidate for Congress once threatened his wife at gunpoint were obtained by his Democratic opponent’s campaign manager, a prosecutor said Thursday.

On instructions from Democrat Samara Barend’s campaign manager, a college student went to the Steuben County Clerk’s office in September to get “publicly available information” about Republican state Sen. John “Randy” Kuhl, county District Attorney John Tunney said.

Court-sealed documents detailing Kuhl’s divorce in 2000 were included inadvertently, and the student, Andrew Rachlin, 22, copied the papers and turned them over to Barend campaign manager Jonah Siegellak, said Tunney, who investigated at Kuhl’s request.

Barend and Siegellak have repeatedly said there was no connection between the campaign and the release of the divorce papers. In the Oct. 7 edition of The Leader newspaper in Corning, Siegellak said that “no one in this camp went to retrieve those documents.”

Barend in a statement Thursday did not address Tunney’s findings, saying instead: “Today it was made clear that Mr. Kuhl is the one who has explaining to do. Now he is free to explain why he told the public there was ‘nothing incriminating’ in the documents.”

Kuhl and his former wife, Jennifer, have called the release of the papers “ugly politics” and an invasion of the family’s privacy.

“I was extremely disappointed to learn that Samara Barend was behind” the disclosure, Kuhl said in a statement.

The district attorney said no charges will be filed.

Kuhl is running against Barend for the seat vacated by retiring Republican Rep. Amo Houghton. Barend is a former aide to New York Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Earlier this year, Illinois Republican Jack Ryan ended his U.S. Senate bid after the release of divorce records that included allegations that he took his wife to sex clubs.

So why hasn't anyone gone after Kerry's divorce records? What's good for the goose...

Steuben County Clerk’s office - this place should be investigated -

Remember it was 3 times for the office where K.B. case was held.

Are we seeing a pattern - ? If someone doesn't like one side or the other in a case while working in the office - make sure information gets out to harm the side you don't like - a "mistake" is an excuse that is used often and not challenged enough -

in my opinion - this practice should be watched -

This is my home district and I'm appalled.
Our local conservative radio talk show host first alerted us on his website on Tuesday.

I hope this dirty trick will backfire on Ms. Barend's campaign. But there are still quite a few yard signs supporting her.

My opinion: First of all, there are no quicky divorces in NY. For mutual agreeemnt, You have to be seperated for at least a year before a judge will rule UNLESS Abuse is alleged.

I *think* some people embellish their divore affidavits with abuse allegations in order to circumvent the 1 year rule.

I'm not saying that happened here, but it's not unheard of.
Allegations were made and Rep. Kuhl denied them.
But remember: Divorce decisions simply disolve the marriage, they don't prove or disprove any such allegations

This wouldn't have happened if conservative Mark Assini had won the nomination. But the establishment rallied around RINO Randy Kuhl without properly vetting him. It's blown up in their faces. Luckily, it's unlikely a 'Rat could win here.

It remains a 2004 tragedy that Jack Ryan failed to stay and fight the evil conspiracy which unleashed his divorce records against both he and his wife's wishes. Had he stayed and attacked Obama, Mayor Daley and his goons, we would have a real Senate race today in the State of Illinois.

The idea that sealed documents were included "inadvertently" is absolute hogwash. How many crimes are Hillary and her disciples going to commit with impunity? (What ever happened to the Marc Rich pardon "investigation?") Is this District Attorney Tunney here a Demoncrap? The Republican candidate ought to demand a serious full-scale investigation by somebody motivated and competent.

Yeah, right - I have some swamp land -

okay - if you think so - but still it wouldn't hurt to keep an eye out for that kind of action because it seems odd that it has happened so close to the k.b. case -

The Judicial System in America is already controlled by the Democrats and this is proof positive. You cannot see John Kerry's divorce papers but you can see any sealed divorce records of a Republican. The Judicial System in America is already on the take and controlled.
America, it is later than you think!
