Bush backs temporary work ID for immigrants

OK for jobs unfilled by Americans, he tells Hispanic audience

The Associated Press

Updated: 3:31 p.m. ET Oct. 22, 2004

WASHINGTON - President Bush, saying the United States should find a more humane way to treat immigrants, told a Spanish-language television network Thursday that he supports offering temporary cards to immigrants who want jobs that go unfilled by U.S. citizens.

Bush said the card would provide legal status for undocumented immigrants or those who want to come to the United States to work. But he said he would not offer amnesty.

"I recognize that people are coming here to work," Bush told Univision. "And while they're doing jobs that aren't filled by Americans, I think there should be a temporary worker program and a card that helps the workers and employers who want them."

The president had made immigration reform a priority, but put it on the back burner after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. He championed immigration reform again in a White House speech in January, but election politics have prevented any legislative action.

So, email the President with your workable ideas.

I think this is a great idea. People like to get on here and ventilate, but they have no constructive suggestions to what is a genuine problem. If you have them, show them.

"It's not the illegals WITH jobs that are a problem."

They are a hugh problem, they are taking the construction jobs, reducing construction wages working for cash making $18-20/hr. with no comp insurance, payroll taxes, or income taxes being paid.

GWB has done little to stop illegal aliens. But John Kerry would even be worst.

If voting for the "lesser of two evil" buys a few more days, so be it.

"BTW, you probably haven't read President Bush's speeches where the problem will be solved by raising the Mexican middle class class and eliminating the corruption of the Mexican govt."

Have you ever been to Mexico?
Have you ever lived close to Mexico?
Do you know anything about Mexico?

A prerequisite for raising the Mexican middle class is eliminating Mexican corruption, and George Bush KNOWS the only way that can EVER be accomplished is if we annex Mexico!

"What will happen is that your chicken will now cost you close to $4 a pound because cheap labor is no longer abundant. And chicken wouldn't be the only thing that goes up. Orange juice for $6 a carton "on sale" and fruit $7 a pound."

If these things cost more people will either pay it or not, and if they don't then these business should fold. So be it, this is what is supposed to happen in a capitalist country, we are not a socialist country, cheep labor should not be subsidized by tax payers and the middle class.

We are not a slave country either, this issue was settled after the civil war, cheep labor should not be plagiarized.

what is it about these concepts of capitalism and human dignity that our nation does not understand or have forgotten?

It's the migrant worker, the undocumented immigrant who are keeping OUR prices low.

Bull sh*t. You think these corrupt, greedy, criminal employers are passing on their profits from hiring illegal aliens to you and me?

LOL! No one is this stupid.

Funeral services for James and Emilia Lee were held this morning at the Southeast Arizona Veterans Cemetery -- the American couple slain in that alien smuggler car crash here last Saturday. About a dozen other neighbors are still hospitalized with severe injuries.

I was wishing that a goodly number of the greedy jerkoffs who profit off illegal alien labor had been forced to attend so that they could see the true cost of their profits.

I have tried diligently to find any mention of any words spoken by ny of our elected leaders. There have been none. No condolences, no apologies for failed policies, no condemnation of the conditions that caused that tragedy.

None. Nada. Zip. All seem to have adopted the idea of "The less said, the sooner forgotten."

Many of us here on Free Republic had cynical comments predicting lawsuits by the families of the dead and injured illegal aliens. Yeah, we're probably right.

I'm really hoping that the American survivors and their families do the same thing -- a big, ugly class action lawsuit against the governments of the United States and Mexico.

Been watching the board tonight. It's all about, "well who you going to vote for, Kerry?" It's the "better of two evils", all night long. This is so damn sickening.

Check your mail in a few.

Vote for Cthulhu. Why be a wimp and settle for the lesser of two evils when you can have the real deal.

I have gone way beyond casual cynicism.

Watch. After the election, regardless of who is elected, nothing meaningful will be done, and the pandering will only continue. Of course, this year, both party's will be claiming victory and it'll be a political tug o war for three months after the election. Then, everything will return to selling out the country and pandering to Mexico again. I don't know why I bother to follow this crap.
