Bush backs temporary work ID for immigrants

OK for jobs unfilled by Americans, he tells Hispanic audience

The Associated Press

Updated: 3:31 p.m. ET Oct. 22, 2004

WASHINGTON - President Bush, saying the United States should find a more humane way to treat immigrants, told a Spanish-language television network Thursday that he supports offering temporary cards to immigrants who want jobs that go unfilled by U.S. citizens.

Bush said the card would provide legal status for undocumented immigrants or those who want to come to the United States to work. But he said he would not offer amnesty.

"I recognize that people are coming here to work," Bush told Univision. "And while they're doing jobs that aren't filled by Americans, I think there should be a temporary worker program and a card that helps the workers and employers who want them."

The president had made immigration reform a priority, but put it on the back burner after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. He championed immigration reform again in a White House speech in January, but election politics have prevented any legislative action.

I've got an O dark early appointment in the canyons. I'm putting Return of the King on the DVD drive and watching the charge of the Rohirrim several times before sacking out.

Before I forget -- Hawking has another article coming out soon. I've seen a couple of parts of it and it left me babbling to myself like a demented bastard. If he's only partially correct, several basic assumptions are completely toast.

It's not the illegals WITH jobs that are a problem. It's the illegals that come here to leach off our schools, hospitals, and welfare programs that are the problem.

All illegals are problems. Even the ones that DO have jobs funnel billions down to Mexico each year. And that's only the economic side of the issue.

Today I walked out of a cosmetologist because we couldn't communicate... she was a native Spanish speaker turned American cosmetologist--albeit in Miami--and she had no idea what I meant when I said "inch."

Are they better than the Democrats? Yes, a thousand times!

George Wallace, like him or not, was right. "There ain't a dime's worth of difference between the parties." And a dime ain't worth what it was in 1968.

Bush was talking about getting the corruption out of the Mexican system.

That will only happen when hell freezes over. You must be kidding. It is not America's responsibility to do anything for the Mexican system - that is up to them. In the meantime (until hell freezes over), illegal aliens should be deported according to our immigration laws, and American citizens should not be forced to spend billions to support them.

I've voted Republican four 35 years and the party I see now stinks like a dead fish.

That's the sad truth. I'm voting for the Constitution Party this time around. They won't win, but it's my way of telling the "new" Republicans that they stink.

They are a hugh problem, they are taking the construction jobs, reducing construction wages working for cash making $18-20/hr. with no comp insurance, payroll taxes, or income taxes being paid.

Yes, yes, but the construction contractors have passed on the savings they make hiring illegals to the consumers. Just look at how cheap houses are.

BWWAHAHAHAHAHA...

Your support of lawlessness has no basis in Christian scripture or tradition. Don't try and hide behind this with the cloak of Christianity. Read Romans 13:1-7 if you don't believe me. Mexico, BTW, is a strictly secularist country with very strict immigration laws. The majority of those crossing our borders are agnostic as it is. The "illegal Mexicans are social conservatives spin" is bogus. Read George Barna's data if you don't believe me (the imported Mexican underclass are big supporters of abortion and sexual immorality - perfect Democrat voters, and they'll be voting in great number thanks to Republican Kool-Aid policies.) You might also try reading Allan Wall, an American who is married to a Mexican woman who lived in Mexico before being sent to Iraq as part of his Texas National Guard unit. Another common lie is the assimilation myth. There is no assimilation with welfare and multiculturalism. They only "assimilate" to a lawless, degenerate gang culture. Take a look at Heather MacDonald's article on life in LA for a true picture.

Those who want to enter this country should do what Michelle Malkin's parents did: Obtain a green card and become naturalized citizens. Malkin is of Philipino ancestry but she is pure American in heart - something that doesn't take place with illegals who listen to the endless Marxist propaganda from MEChA, LaRaza-reconquista, and other multiculturalist traitors. Your $4.00-lb Chicken argument is spurious. Robotic technology is far more advanced in Japan, a mono-racial society with no immigration, than here. If the plantation-owners were busted and made to obey law like the rest of us peons, they'd have to invest in hi-tech robotics to reduce their fearsome labor costs. The cheap labor agrument isn't substantially different than that used by slave owners in the 1850s.

how do you close a 2,000 mile border(?)

Place gringos ranting conspiracy theories every 500 yards or so. Jihad, Bayou and yourself have to be good for at least 10 miles. Of course, that will be rough on tourism.

Please, you're not unintelligent. Get help before the Underpants Gnomes and the Alternate Universe of Missing Socks become priorities.

You are incorrect. Illegals are taking most of the entry level trade jobs that SHOULD go to kids (US citizens) graduating tech high schools. Not all kids are college material. These kids (hundreds of thousands of them each year), are relegated to dead end jobs, instead of the trade jobs in which they spent 4 yars training for. Once again, Americans are gettin screwed.

No, you "Bushies" are simple-minded...Each failure to enforce(and deport) those here illegally encourages more illegal immigration..9/11 was caused almost as much by the stubborn refusal to enforce our immigration laws as by Al-Quaida....Bush(and his immigration-clone,Clinton) should be ashamed....3000 Americans died because of that ...

Right on!...I've talked to ALOT of people(even Democrats) who are fed up with illegal immigration and the failure to follow a policy of assimilation rather than this divisive muli-cultural crap...Bush is going to lose the votes of those who would normally vote for him because of this...

The problem is Pat was right, and Bush was terribly wrong and America has paid a horrible price because of it....of course, that won't stop the lemmings on this board from running to the polls to re-elect his moderate liberal backside...

I was just informed by my friends wacko wife ( a Kerry voter) last night that Bush is responsible for all of the illegal mexicans in the United States. I really think there is WAY to much pot smoking going on these days.

"Bush was talking about getting the corruption out of the Mexican system."

LOL!! What a crock. We going to invade and have a little regime change?

As long as Mexico exports all their unwanted to us, there will not be anyone left to fight their corrupt system. Sending back those that are here and encouraging those still there to fight for change is the only way things will. They have to do it for themselves.
