Kerry 's World Series History
The Weekly Standard ^ | 10/22/2004 | Michael Goldfarb

Posted on 10/22/2004 12:10:14 PM PDT by americaprd

JOHN KERRY, in his grand effort to be all things to all people, has spent the last few weeks trying to convince people that he, too, is a sports junkie, a hardcore Red Sox fan, and devotee of the NFL. His missteps, such as lauding "Lambert Field" during a visit to Wisconsin in August, may prove catastrophic come November 2. This particular blunder spurred the Wisconsin-based Football Fans For Truth to action, and may be, to some extent, responsible for Wisconsin's seeming transition from blue to red-these people take their football very seriously. With the spotlight now focused on the Red Sox and their tragic World Series history, Football Fans For Truth is drawing attention to what might be another major league gaffe by John Kerry.

On October 25, 1986, the Boston Red Sox were facing off against the New York Mets in the sixth game of the World Series. With a three games to two lead over the Mets, the Sox had an opportunity, at long last, to bring a championship to a city which hadn't known victory since 1914. In the bottom of the 10th inning, with a two-run lead, first-baseman Bill Buckner let a ground-ball to skip through his legs, and thus allowed the Mets Ray Knight to score the game's winning run. This infamous error was witnessed by none other than John Kerry, who on numerous occasions has claimed to have been seated at Shea Stadium that night, at a distance of no more than 30 yards from Buckner.

Unlike Kerry's disputed presence in Cambodia on December 25, 1969, his claim to have been a witness to one of the most infamous moments in Red Sox history should not have raised suspicion. But after claiming his favorite Red Sox player of all time was Eddie Yost, who never played a single game for the club, the research arm of Football Fans For Truth vigorously worked to verify Kerry's account of the event. The results of their investigation:

N.M. GOVERNOR DETAILS HIS STATE'S SUCCESS STORY Published on October 26, 1986 Author(s): Peter J. Howe, Globe Staff

New Mexico's governor, who holds the highest elected post of any Hispanic nationwide, and the head of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination were given awards for political excellence last night by the Massachusetts Latino Democratic Committee.

More than 250 people--including Gov. Dukakis, US Sen. John Kerry and an array of state Cabinet members--attended the banquet at the World Trade Center in South Boston honoring Gov. Toney Anaya and Alex Rodriguez.

Football Fans For Truth notes that Senator Kerry's presence at Game 7 of the 1986 World Series can be confirmed by the UPI wire service. This leads to several questions. Could the Senator have confused the loss in game six with the loss in game seven? Was Buckner's error mis-seared into his memory just like his Cambodian Christmas? Did Senator Kerry perhaps hop a private jet after dinner in Boston, making it to Shay Stadium just in time for the tenth inning? Or is the Boston Globe perhaps at fault, having misreported the facts of the night in question?

Senator, Red Sox fans deserve the truth-did you or did you not root for the Mets on the night of October 25, 1986?

I'm sure Kerry, who relives Vietnam in his locked, basement room, with his 8mm films, and nekkid, confuses what he is watching with what he has done.....

Wonder if he requested a Purple Heart-break award that night. I guess, tho' when you marry rich widows, you can have any memories that you'd like.

Yet another gaffe in this very poorly written article.

The game was tied when the ball when between Buckner's legs.

John Kerry was actually running the Boston Marathon when he was supposed to be at Game 6 in New York.

If you're going to write this stuff, you need to be accurate: the Sox last won the Series in 1918, NOT 1914.

That ruined it for me.

Still, Kerry is a liar and an elitist trying to lower himself to Joe Sixpack, which is the premise of the article.

How funny will it be if Wisconsin costs him the election over his asinine botch of Lambeau Field?

Congratulations for being the first on this thread to catch it. I always felt bad for Bill Buckner taking the rap for the game tying, not the game losing error in the 6th and not thepivitol 7th game. What is seldom noted is that the Red Sox had a gaping hole at First Base before Bill Buckner took on the position. He not only played it splendidly during the regular season but had over 100 RBIs from the number two spot.

That in itself was noteworthy, but does anyone remember that Billy Bucks struck out only 25 times that year and was one of the best clutch hitters in the game?

I have kept all my World Series tickets but have also bought tickets to the away games which I didn't attend. They are easily available on eBay and elsewhere.

Ah, but he could find tickets for seats that were "30 yards away" from Buckner?

That's 1918, bub. Pretty stupid mistake in a story about Kerry's stupid mistakes.

Editors asleep at the Weekly Standard?

Must be. This reads like a bad parody of an Italian accent:

"In the bottom of the 10th inning, with a two-run lead, first-baseman Bill Buckner let a ground-ball to skip through his legs, and thus allowed the Mets Ray Knight to score the game's winning run."

"Eh? Who letta da ground-a ball to skip alla ova my meat-a balls?"
