BERN: Swiss authorities said on Wednesday they are holding a man suspected of leading an Islamic terrorist group in Spain. Federal Prosecutors Office spokesman Hansjuerg Mark Wiedmer said the man had been arrested for immigration violations. He declined to identify him but confirmed he was the same individual identified in Spanish media reports.
Spanish investigators on Tuesday said the man was Mohamed Achraf. Authorities believe Achraf, who was born in the United Arab Emirates, headed a radical Muslim cell that allegedly was plotting to bomb Spains National Court, a hub of investigations of Islamic terrorism. Seven suspects were arrested on Monday in Madrid and southern Spain, and one more Tuesday in the northern city of Pamplona.
Most are Algerian, and some are suspected of contacts with militants elsewhere in Europe, the United States and Australia.
Spanish officials earlier said Achraf was arrested at the request of Judge Baltasar Garzon of the National Court, Spains leading anti-terrorism magistrate.
But Swiss officials denied this, saying there was no Spanish warrant. Wiedmer told The Associated Press that the man detained in Switzerland was arrested by cantonal, or state, police, on grounds of breaching the countrys rules on foreigners residence. He declined to give further details.
