YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Sen. John Kerry went goose hunting this morning, no doubt hoping to bag more votes than geese.
But sportsmen's groups are already seeing through Kerry's posturing. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), among others, points out that Kerry's continuing efforts to cast himself as an avid hunter do not square with his record as a U.S. senator.
"The senator's rhetoric and play-acting aren't fooling anyone. Kerry the 'hunter' is endorsed by radical anti-hunting organizations like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Fund for Animals," said Lawrence G. Keane, senior vice president and general counsel for NSSF, the trade association for the hunting and recreational shooting sports industry.
The campaigns of both President Bush and Senator Kerry have placed a high priority on winning the sportsmen's vote. But hunters and anglers may play an even greater role in the election than either camp had predicted, based on a new survey by the bipartisan Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation. The survey suggests some 80 percent of sportsmen in three swing states (Ohio, Florida and New Mexico) will vote in this year's election. In Ohio, where Kerry hunted today, the survey found that 75 percent of Ohio sportsmen are considered "likely voters." A majority of sportsmen polled said that it is essential for a candidate to share their views on hunting and fishing issues and, for many, gun rights is a top concern.
"The only thing Senator Kerry is hunting today is the all-important sportsmen's vote," said Keane. "Senator Kerry only plays a sportsman on TV. Away from the cameras, he would ban semi-automatic shotguns commonly used in hunting and recreational shooting enjoyed by millions of Americans."
Keane was referring to Kerry co-sponsored legislation known as "The Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2003," S. 1431.
On Saturday, the day Kerry purchased his Ohio hunting license, Democrat operative Mike McCurry joked that Kerry was off "to go kill defenseless animals somewhere." The New York Times characterized the remark as "a reminder that, even while courting middle-of-the-road voters, the party's base is never entirely out of anyone's mind."
NSSF is the trade association for the companies and businesses that make and sell firearms, ammunition and other products for the 40 million Americans who responsibly hunt and enjoy recreational shooting. Learn more at http://www.nssf.org.
Again...As Dr. Phil so eloquently states is:
That Dog Can't Hunt!
Why dont Kerry just get back to wind surfing and peddling his $5,000 bike... He aint fooling anyone.
Not only does this not impress any real sportsman or gun owner, but I'm tellin' you, this cost him a few votes with the looney left.
I keep hearing that Kerry looked like Elmer Fudd in his hunting cap. Anybody got any pictures?
