I watched it yesterday and posted it on another board I go to. Of course the rats came out of hiding and were outraged that Bush was using the girl and exploiting her.

They are really starting to piss me off. Anyways, I loved the ad and it made me get all teary eyed. I love our prez!!

Kerry's using an ad with Kristin Breitweisser. AND the ad was made LONG ago. Saving it for this point in time. She's got her little girl in the ad.

Are the RATS outraged that Breitweiser is using her little girl in a Kerry ad?

Kerry supporters can't have decided on the facts. No kidding. I did not say that they decide on facts.

What I said was that those who puruse facts (conservatives implied) decided a long time ago.

There are simply some that don't know much about politics, but will vote for President Bush based on this ad.

The democrats use emotion, and so should we.

It's a 527 ad. Bush had nothing to do with it.

No, but photo ops are easy to stage for Democrats. Look, I believe everything about this ad is sincere, and true, and touching. But the fact is that it CAN be staged. Kerry and Gore are lousy at staging such moments. Clinton was better at it.

No Republican can ever get the staging cooperation from the media, so this wasn't staged. But Democrats can stage this stuff. And the more Repubicans legitimize content-free politics, the more Democrats WILL stage it.

My mom just now called me and told me about this ad. The girl is from Mason, OH (pretty sure about that, anyway) - and so am I (originally--my parents still live there - just north of Cincinnati) - (my handle - MasonGal). Anyway - just thought I'd throw that in - for whatever it's worth...

What content can sway an undecided voter at this point? After almost a year of constant campaigning, campaign literature readily available, website completely devoted to each candidates positions, 3 heavily watched debates and 24 hours a day of campaign coverage from the press, there are still some people who are "undecided". They will never be decided on the facts because "politics is boring", or "I can't stand to watch them talk", or "I don't really have a say anyway".

To those idiots, sometimes a teary commercial is what it takes to get them to pull the lever for your guy. But you suggest that we not go for those people? Insane. An uninformed vote has the same power as the most informed vote, as sick as that is. Politics, like sausage, is not an easy process to watch during the making. This is a commercial that is right in the middle of the grinding process, but what will garner us many more votes than a policy commercial.

I have been watching the PFAvoterfund ads and agree. However, when I posted a link to one several weeks ago and suggested this might be an organization FReepers should consider funding, some wiseacre here hit the abuse button and upbraided me that my 'solicitation' was out of line.

"Whichever reason motivates him to do the right thing is the "right" reason."

So, for you the end justifies the means - no matter who you exploit and how maudlin it is.

I prefer facts not emotional exploitation for ANY reason or CAUSE. People are emotional enough. It's FACTS they need to get acquainted with so they can deal rationally, NOT EMOTIONALLY with the issue.

If they cannot or will not be swayed by facts, do you then suggest letting the other side count on their vote? An uninformed, emotionally based vote counts the same as a reasoned, well researched vote as wrong as that seems. We need the votes of uninformed, emotionally swayed people, sad as that is, and this commercial will get some of those votes.

unfortunately most independents and undecideds could care less about issues and instead vote based on pure emotion not logic.

But it perpetuates the problem - voting on emotion.

Don't you think it's time to help them grow up?

I do!

How? By losing to those who prey on their emotions? The time for educating people is not 2 weeks before the election, it's the 3 years after the election.

There will always be people who vote purely on emotion. You can't change that. You can't change the apathy and disinterest people have in policy. It would be nice, but reality is what counts at election time.

4% of the electorate is a bunch of touchy-feely "Oh he makes me feel good" voters. It might shrink or rise a bit on occassion, but that's where it is at. In a close race we cannot afford to let the opposition just have them because their attitude is so disappointing to us. Every vote counts the same.

From the person who can discuss macro-economics on the fly, to the 18 year old girl upset that Old Navy was out of Baby Blue hoodies and it is the worst news she could imagine; all votes are of equal weight and importance. Just a fact.

Using emotions to get through lifes decisions is not healthy. You emotions will cloud rational thinking. Don't you think it's time we started to encourage RATIONAL THINKING?

And yet you refuse to use rational thinking on this subject. You cannot ignore those who refuse to pay attention or you will lose elections.

Just because everybody SHOULD use rational thought to vote, does not mean that everybody WILL use rational thought.

And just because you wish it to be so will not make it so.

So, you can either accept reality and see the need for emotionally persuasive advertising, or you can live in your utopian fantasy-land and curse it's use. Either way, the Bush team has chosen to garner more votes than not. That's reality.
