NEW YORK - They played the obligatory classics: "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Girls on Film." But when Simon Le Bon ripped into the chorus of the new single "(Reach Up for the) Sunrise," the sun suddenly illuminated Times Square as if to officially mark a new day for Duran Duran.
As the original five members performed for "Good Morning America" last week, it seemed the planets had finally aligned for a band that had been ignored through its ever-changing lineup and lackluster albums of the past ten years.
The British quintet once created a fan hysteria that was compared to the Beatles', and they are largely credited for ushering in the music video age with their innovative and exotic clips. Still, until recently, they couldn't buy the sort of publicity they're now enjoying.
"We are really pleased to be back in the history books where for a while it looked as though we were being written out of them," Le Bon told The Associated Press, commenting on the Lifetime Achievement award MTV finally bestowed upon the video pioneers last year and the sudden excitement over Duran Duran's 12th album, "Astronaut."

That looks like Arnold Horshak with a wig, rouge and fake moustache!
Did they/do they suck?
I thought the last living member of "Flock of Seagulls" was shot dead by Thomas L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction . . . ?
Oh God, that gave me stitches smonk!
I still remember when I first heard Motley Crue's version of "Smokin' in the Boys Room" on the classic rock station.
I felt old.
As long as we are keeping Cat Stevens out of this country, maybe we could also slip this guy's name on the list...
Thanks for clarifying. Your other one was too heavy for me this time of night. I agree with you. Seems like we are always the bad guy no matter what we do anyway. Do nothing and we let atrocities be committed, get involved and we overreacted. Given that, and not only because of that, we must always do the right thing and that is protect our own self-interests, in this case, protect ourselves from blood thirsty barbarians. Like GWB said, doing the right thing is not always popular.
Smokin' In The Boy's Room was already an OLDIE by the time Motley Crue covered Cub Koda/Brownsville Station's hit.
Geez, I had that magazine, many moons ago...
Simon had such a babyface back then!
Of course, they were always ahead of everyone else with videos. The Chauffer still makes me blush, as does the unedted Girls on Film. But their whole 'series' of videos in the then Sri Lanka are classic.
LOL....I see the picture of that guy and have a Hall and Oates flashback....
Like, omigaaaw-ud!...I said FERRIS!
SAVE FERRIS!!
John "Breck Boy" Edwards wishes he had hair like that.
AGREE!
But y'all gotta know...I was truely a MAW freak back then. Couldn't get enough of them. I remember one summer at the beach...it was like they wrote the album for that trip. *sigh* I think it had to do with the fact that Colin Hay was Scottish...and the Scottish voices are always what gets me.
Was also mad for Big Country. Sadly, Stuart Adamson committed suicide a few years ago. I was really really sad.
Credit to my mom : she was the one that found the little obit blurb about finding his body in a hotel room in a suite in Hawaii. She cut it out and saved it for me because she remembered I liked him and Big Country.
He had such a voice...
