NEW YORK - They played the obligatory classics: "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Girls on Film." But when Simon Le Bon ripped into the chorus of the new single "(Reach Up for the) Sunrise," the sun suddenly illuminated Times Square as if to officially mark a new day for Duran Duran.
As the original five members performed for "Good Morning America" last week, it seemed the planets had finally aligned for a band that had been ignored through its ever-changing lineup and lackluster albums of the past ten years.
The British quintet once created a fan hysteria that was compared to the Beatles', and they are largely credited for ushering in the music video age with their innovative and exotic clips. Still, until recently, they couldn't buy the sort of publicity they're now enjoying.
"We are really pleased to be back in the history books where for a while it looked as though we were being written out of them," Le Bon told The Associated Press, commenting on the Lifetime Achievement award MTV finally bestowed upon the video pioneers last year and the sudden excitement over Duran Duran's 12th album, "Astronaut."

And he died, too. Damn.
Who likes Paul Young - "I'm gonna tear your playhouse down"
Yoo-hoo!
Shoot, my husband gets home from work in a little while, so I can't jam.
I'm with you!
I've been stuffing shoulder pads in my dresses, and I've confiscated some sewing patterns from the 80s.
I tried the lacy socks with stilettos, but I couldn't quite carry it off - change of plans - carry off 80s fashion that is "age appropriate" or when husband is not present ; )
Leggings and baggy sweaters can be left behind, though.
here's you ping!
Now post that pic!
One WHOLE corner devoted ENTIRELY to whatever Harrison Ford picture I could grab.
A couple of Men At Work Posters
A M*A*S*H poster with green fishnet and dog tags courtesy of Spencer's Gifts.
Also, DONT FORGET THE ROCK GROUP BUTTONS. You weren't cool unless you had at LEAST five of your favorite buttons stuck on some article of clothing...the more raunchy or obscure the better.
Twistabeads
asymmetrical collars
Outback Red
fedoras
ANY kind of hat
Elf-boots
fashion panty hose
anything that made you look like you just walked off the set of "Mad Max : The Thunderdome"
Hmmmm...considering how the Aussies have proven to be such good friens, I think its about time to revive all the old Aussie-influences of the 80s, don't you think????
Brit invasion? Fuhgeddahboudit! Go Down Under!
XTC
Leggings were HOT! I loved the 80s.
Have been desperately looking for the BC The Crossing concert poster, where Stuart is wearing a plaid shirt.
I have been storing up 80s patterns myself...and any old 80s fashion I can find at the resale shop.
Funny thing...things dont fit *quite* as well as they used to !
But my fave 80's band was out of Scotland. BIG COUNTRY was unbeatable to me, U2 was just second fiddle to those guys IMHO...
Pick up a copy of the album "Steeltown" by Big Country. Feel the power...
Alright. BRB...
I remember a few Big Country members played backup on Pete Townshend's solo records.
There was another band that had a singer that sounded exactly like "The Cure" and their style of music was even better in my honest opinion.
The Essence... was the group and songs like "Ice" and "The Cat" and "Only for You" were unbeatable. If you can find them, you must give them an ear.
Or Freepmail me.
It is a photo I took of the copy of the polaroid that I had.
Wow, that was 11 years ago already! I feel so old...
LOL, I once was king of collectors on Big Country. I have that poster (not for sale). My fave song by them is the remix of "Wonderland" and the B-side to "In a BC" ("All of Us").
A buddy of mine used to run an American unofficial fan club of theirs.
Ahhh, memories...
BTW... Have you heard of "Runrig"? Another Scottish group from that same era (that are still together actually, one of the members was almost an early BC member).
Big Country was great. I loved those bag pipes!
E-bow was the instrument you used with a guitar to make that "bag pipe" sound. It sorta strung out the sound with an eerie feel to it. Mike Oldfield used it a few times and a few other groups but it was very hard to master and few guitar players to this day know how to use it with much effect.
I cannot believe that there are over 300 posts on 80's music and not one person mentioned Oingo Boingo. Fun music and great in concert. Must have seen them live 8 or 9 times.
Hubby hates them though. Coincidentally, every BC album I had mysteriously disappeared. then he goes and subjects me to Foo Fighter's rendition of Baker Street. Will never forgive them for doing that.
The "I hope you like it" sight has a listing of a couple of BC influenced groups. will have to check them out.
Hey Dat Mon...watchu think of ol' Kirk Whalum? Saw him in concert back in '88...am now married to the guy I went to see him with. he wrote on the album I had autographed that I had beautiful eyes! *whee!*
What is that "I hope you like it" site you are referring to. Sounds interesting.
