NEW YORK - They played the obligatory classics: "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Girls on Film." But when Simon Le Bon ripped into the chorus of the new single "(Reach Up for the) Sunrise," the sun suddenly illuminated Times Square as if to officially mark a new day for Duran Duran.
As the original five members performed for "Good Morning America" last week, it seemed the planets had finally aligned for a band that had been ignored through its ever-changing lineup and lackluster albums of the past ten years.
The British quintet once created a fan hysteria that was compared to the Beatles', and they are largely credited for ushering in the music video age with their innovative and exotic clips. Still, until recently, they couldn't buy the sort of publicity they're now enjoying.
"We are really pleased to be back in the history books where for a while it looked as though we were being written out of them," Le Bon told The Associated Press, commenting on the Lifetime Achievement award MTV finally bestowed upon the video pioneers last year and the sudden excitement over Duran Duran's 12th album, "Astronaut."

Yes I am positive. None of they Taylor boys in Duran Duran are related, either by blood or marriage. Their only connection was/is Duran Duran itself.
"how could you forget Bill Bruford and Terry Bozzio"
Bill Bruford....was he with the Dead?? If so..never followed them.
Terry Bozzio...now that was a tight band! I especially liked his wife who was the lead singer...hot!
Now of course I cant remember the actual name of the band!
Now this is why I post on Free Republic!
Learn something every day
;0)
I love Duran Duran. The fangirl in me has been screaming since I read this. :-)
I thought I heard a blurp about them last night on TV. Unreal....I admit I was one of those Duranie's, had 62 of their albums (remix of this, Japanese version of that, extended play of the other - I was nuts - even had the blonde bangs) How old are these guys now?
A couple of weeks later, we saw the whole video on MTV and figured out what happened.
I was partial to Romeo Void (I Might Like You Better If We Slept Together).
I was also big on anyone that released an album on Enigma Records, especially the Pink Dust label. Plan 9 was the best.
Wow. That Mike Score gets around. Maybe he'll pop up in the Pat Robertson threads next.
Sounds like a nightmare!
I wanted them but never got them. The closest thing I did was dye my hair black ala Nick Rhodes in his Arcadia phase.
LOL!!
21 years later, it's not something I tell people.
From the eyes of a 15 yo, a guy with make-up didn't seem wierd - just artsy!
I went to bed not soon after starting the thread, but I recently purchased (thanks to eBay), video compilations of.......(drumroll please) Duran Duran, ABC, Adam and the Ants!
Yes, I can program my video viewing all day!!!!
I also bought some tapes some guy taped from the television with Psychedelic Furs and other awesomem bands.
AAAAAAAHHHH!!!
FLASHBACK TO MY HIGH SCHOOL BEDROOM!
POSTERS, ALBUMS, HATS, DYNASTY-STYLE DRESSES, STILETTO HEELS WITH LACY BOBBY SOCKS, MINI-SKIRTS!!!
That was sad.
Seems out teen idols didn't last very long.
Unlike the walking dead like Rolling Stones, who stopped making good music in 1977.
I was watching the one-hit wonder special, and I turned if off because of all the folks who died - the singer from The Waitresses died of cancer, Jermaine Stewart died of Aids, the guy from Frankie Goes to Hollywood died of Aids...then we have Michael Hutchence and Stuart.
Such a shame.
You stink.
How can you leave off ABC?
cough, cough
Being stuck in Bumpkin, Ohio, I managed to get quite a few imports - I got the photo album books they made in England, and some LPs not available here.
I have the live version of Come Up and See Me, Make Me Smile. Damn!
Union of the Snake Alert!!! LOL!
Awe man.
This sucks.
Nightflight on TBS hosted by Lisa Robinson.
I've been trying to get bootlegs, but nobody seems to have taped them.
I know....since this thread came up I have been revisiting some old BC websites. The BC band members have gone on to other things, but I miss Stuart's voice. There was just something about it, you know? Stuart, actually, was working on a country music career in Nashville when he disappeared. All anyone can figure is that his alcoholism was taking its toll once more. He made one album with Mark Hummon, called "Supernatural". They called themselves The Raphaels. The music was okay, but I sometimes wondered how those two were going to keep going. Stuart's style was distinctly different than Mark's and you could tell whose song was whose. It wasnt too long after this debut that Stuart disappeared and ended up in Hawaii of all places. I still havent been able to figure that one out.
