I was doing a bit of research on this topic a few years ago and I accessed the Census Bureau web site. I found that in the mid 1800s the US began to focus Census Bureau attention on the number of slaves in their various age/gender categories. But what stunned me was to learn that Census Bureau records show that a large number of slaves in the mid 1800s were NOT owned by whites...they were owned by blacks.

I returned to the Census Bureau to try to get the URL to post here, but now I can't find any specifics on Census data. Its late, and I may not be awake enough to find what I'm looking before. However, I did find this old FR post that addresses the issue.
