21 Arrested in Arlington Protest of Bush Administration AIDS Policy [ACT UP at BC 04 HQ]

Arlington police arrested 21 protesters yesterday after they chained themselves to the front door and one another at Bush-Cheney campaign headquarters during a demonstration against administration policies.

About 120 protesters took part in the demonstration outside the building on Wilson Boulevard that houses the campaign headquarters, police said. The protest began about 2 p.m. and lasted 90 minutes, they said.

The protest was organized by ACT UP and Housing Works, a nonprofit agency that provides social services, housing and health care to people with AIDS in New York, said Robert Cordero, director of federal advocacy for Housing Works.

"We are here to protest the failures of the Bush administration's AIDS policies," Cordero said. "There are 40,000 new infections per year in the United States, more people uninsured, more people who need housing."

The protesters were charged with trespassing, and police used bolt cutters to remove seven people who had chained themselves to the front door, said Matt Martin, a police spokesman. Fourteen other people, chained to one another, were removed from the office, he said.

Sharonann Lynch, a member of ACT UP, criticized what she said was under-funding of programs to combat AIDS globally.

Taylor Griffin, a spokesman for the Bush-Cheney campaign, said the president is "fully engaged in the fight against AIDS."

"The president has proposed a five-year, $15 billon initiative that triples funding to fight AIDS in the hardest-hit areas of the world," Griffin said. "Domestically he has increased funding by 27 percent in AIDS research, care and prevention since taking office."

He said the protest is part of the democratic process.

"We understand that," he said. "At the same time, it's important that it doesn't disrupt the work environment."

People so ignorant they protest for things they already have.

ACT UP is the organization that disrupted religious services at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York a few years back with blasphemies against the Blessed Sacrament.

Right. And how many of those 40,000 new infections are a result of administration policy? It seems to me, in my naive view, that most (not all, but most) HIV infections are the result of *personal* behavior....unprotected, risky sex, shared needles, etc. Oh, but I forgot...I'm just a practitioner of hate......./groan/

Strange, I saw a (libertarian?) person yelling at Bush because of the government money in aids programs, particularly for Africa.

Why is it that grown adults don't understand the concept that the anus is EXIT ONLY?

Let me get this straight(No pun intended !): President Bush proposed a huge funding increase ( 2 BILLION dollars) to combat AIDS-far more than anyone had dared to suggest, and far more than the UN's feeble efforts.

So this makes him a target for gays ??

Get a job, pay some rent, buy a little health plan, don't stick needles in your arm (btw, don't stick anything where it don't belong) & you ACTSTUPID people will go away. Keep doing what your doing & you'll go away too!

Yes they do, I agree. These also are the same people who funneled some of what they do get for research into activist organizations, so the neck with them. Plus they openly refuse to stop the practice of spreading AIDS, and I am so sorry, but cure starts with stopping the spread.

How does not having a house make it more likely that you would get AIDS???

Anyway, on a side note, don't ever confuse HIV with AIDS, these people get really upset over this. (I have no idea why, I guess having HIV is cooler than Having AIDS)

yes and a gay couple here, male, went into a church and they kissed in front of the Catholic congregation, to protest the same thing, they call it blasphemy. HA! One of them is now running for office here.

After what ACTUP did at St. Patrick's Cathedral, the proper response to an ACTUP protester is to hit them in the head with a baseball bat until they stop moving.

Well, I hope the Arlington police had gloves and masks.

No, I don't think that is the answer. They must be publicly challenged and shamed for their religious intolerance.

The administrations policies cause AIDS, not promiscuous unprotected butt-sex.

I learn something new every day.

awwwwww come on, don't you know they take offense at gloves and masks, etc?? They do not like universal precautions! TerAZA is going to make tolerance her priority once in the White House. grrrrr

I had no problem personally with them coming out of the closet, just wish they would keep in the darn house! and leave the little kids out of it!!!

I agree it's difficult. I was just saying that baseball bats are not the answer.

When the Know-Nothings descended on Old St. Patrick's in the 19th century, Catholics defended the sanctuary with clubs and shotguns.

ACTUP doesn't deserve any better treatment.
