Draft law may bring landlords a jail stay

Toledo City Council is considering an ordinance that could put landlords in jail if their tenants hold too many loud parties.

The proposal, which is tougher than either the Athens, Ohio, or Bowling Green ordinances upon which it is based, is an attempt to crack down on student parties in the residential neighborhoods around the University of Toledo, but would apply citywide.

"This ordinance addresses the egregious examples of parties and gatherings that are literally out of control," District 5 Councilman Ellen Grachek said. Co-sponsoring the measure are District 1 Councilman Wilma Brown and at-large Councilman George Sarantou.

A landlords' association says the ordinance holds them responsible for behavior they can't control. And, they said, it could impel a landlord to try to personally break up a party if the police don't do it.

They could cite every attendee of the party....Or give ever increasing fines that result in jail. How could they expect a landlord to break up a party? What happens if that landlord doesn't live in the immediate area?

You know, as far as I'm concerned, Tenet is responsible for his own behavior.

This happens all the time, some local politician gets a bug up their butt, or some resident complains and the local politicians decide somehow its the landlord's responsibility to be mommy dearest to their tenants.

Every time thankfully judges throw this crap out, but frankly these politicians are the ones that need removed.

Hey, understand a simple concept... PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

I used to live about 10 feet behind a house that was formerly a quiet one-family home that was bought and converted into a boarding house for collge students. Not until then did I ever fathom what motivates a person to commit murder.

I guess this ordinance is a good alternative to that.

Weren't there already laws in some communities that limit a landlord's ability to refuse to rent to some people? So, first we force landlords to rent to people, and now we jail the landlords if the tenents don't behave?

You'll have to try a bit harder than that if you want any chance at the Worst Typo Ever award.

Oh, I have to strongly disagree with that nomination. I don't think anything can come close to this whopper of a typo.

Nice. This one is my sentimental favorite, but not really a typo: Bush wins Iowa

"my" for "by" is your idea of a winner? Heck, everyone does that, or something like it. I once went to write "an" in a post, somehow came up with "on" instead, and hit Post on this noble sentiment-- "It must be rough being on old woman in Africa".

But it takes a special talent for a professional news organization to leave an "s" out of "assess".

A couple of years ago, we had a long thread going about a "superannuated nuclear teaty". It's a shame I didn't bookmark that one.

My take on headlines is that they are sales pitches, the good ones get me to click and the nutty ones make me click.

I think there might be an error message because there are two threads with the same title. Here's the link again.
