CHARITY HEAD KIDNAPPED (CARE head in Iraq kidnapped by AQ)
Sky News ^ | 10.19.04

Posted on 10/19/2004 5:17:12 AM PDT by mhking

A senior worker with a British-based charity in Iraq has been kidnapped.

A spokeswoman said Margaret Hassan, who had been working for CARE International, was taken this morning.

Robert Glasser, a director with the charity, said Ms Hassan was CARE's head of operations in Iraq.

He said she was an Iranian national who had been caring for people in the country for more than 25 years.

Mr Glasser added he had no idea of a motive for the kidnap and believed Ms Hassan had been unharmed.

"We are doing what we can for her release," he added.

The Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon told Sky News that his thoughts were "clearly with her family."

"This just demonstrates the depths that the terrorists will go," he added.

The CARE International website says it is a global humanitarian organisation, working with more than 30 million disadvantaged people each year in 72 of the world's poorest countries.

"CARE continues to provide life-saving assistance and essential short-term aid in Iraq. CARE's work is focusing on providing clean water and health care services to the people in southern and central areas of Iraq," the site says.

I did some work for CARE for a web project over the summer. The folks are nice, caring folks (some of them are totally clueless, and recoiled in horror when the realized I'm conservative, but the woman I worked for directly there is nearly as conservative as I am), and they certainly don't deserve this.

In my estimation, this is every bit as bad and pathetic as kidnapping a Red Cross worker to get your way.

This is yet another reason that these monsters need to be utterly destroyed. Period.

Just damn.

If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...

Why must there be a motive?
That's what sandmaggots do.

I'd say the motive was to put Tony Blair on the spot again....the last man, they lingered killing him so there was a lot of press, lots of his mother fainting and going to the hospital, that type of stuff....we NEED to storm in there and KILL them and be done with it....Liberals keep our soldiers hands tied behind their backs.....

Yep. They (the charity) don't have enough money to fork over ransom monies...

Who CARES, she should have left months ago. She knew the peril.

Those people are a nuisance. The troops have other problems to deal with than spending time and effort on a woman who could do some good work back home.

If they know who she is (and this wasn't random) they'll expect someone somewhere will have the $ for ransom.

These people do know the risks involved. What do you think CARE does? You can say the same of christian missionaries every where else.

those people are going by their own will to a theater of war. They must be take the responsabilties.
No one is forcing them to go.

She could do some good work in other countries, such as in South America. No need to go to a muslim country.

That's why it's a war zone. It's not always going to go smoothly.
