SA sure ain't poor: my auntie used to host fundraising shindigs and do all kinds of charity work for the local chapter. Economically hanging on by her nails, she got pretty miffed when she found out the 'Captain', or whatever he was called (they were close buds for a couple years), whe gratefully accepted the money and services she offered (at great sacrifice) was pulling in a salary of over $100,000 for himself. That was in the mid 1970's. Wonder what they're makin' now?
The SA operates on behalf of "the poor" and does some good for them. They are a non-profit organization; I am aware of some resale shops that portray themselves as charities but are really for-profit businesses.
I do agree that many charities consume a lot of contribution dollars as internal operating "expenses" (salaries) and to further fundraising efforts. At the worst of that spectrum you will find charities that spend over 50% of the money received just trying to get more money.
I am not sure where your information came from, but there is no way any Officer (Captain, Major, etc) in The Salvation Army has ever made $100,000 a year. I am a Captain and my yearly salary is just over $25,000.
SA sure ain't poor:
The SA is the second biggest land owner in the world, after the Catholic church.
