Unfortunately, I am with you. I believed Thompson would do the right thing--still don't know why he didn't but he did not last long in politics. Too bad because I think he was one of the good guys.

My eyes opened during the S & L hearings. Could not believe the connections. Was totally astounded by the antics used to avoid answering a simple question and the showboating of the various senators. They are all connected it seems in one way or the other and will NEVER rat on each other. I believe, Congress truly is a good ole boys club.

He didn't have them (again) until 1985 when he went to the Senate. In the military an dishonorable means you give up your medals. It appears (to me) he lost them and they were re-instated in 1985 (someone -- maybe Teddy K. -- pulled some purse strings).

Sorry to sound naive, but since sKerry had all of his "medals", wouldn't that automatically ensure an honorable discharge?

Kerry does have an Honorable Discharge.........dated 1978.........during the Carter Administration.

Kerry's obligated service would have been completed and he would have been eligible for an Honorable Discharge in December 1972.

Why the six year delay?

What's going on here?

The very plausible explanation is that Kerry received a less than honorable discharge that was "upgraded" during the Carter Amnesty program.

See the links in my Post 55.

That's the theory. I'm surprised that somebody at the Pentagon hasn't tracked down Kerry's records and leaked them.

Hey, they did it to Linda Tripp.

I'd like to think Clinton was involved -- unfortunately in 1985 Reagan was President.

IF they exist, I believe John O'Neill has them. there have been mentions that some of the Swifties attended hearings on this matter, of course I don't know if that's true.

if all of this pans out in the next two weeks, I suggest we all submit our medical bills (for the ulcers we are all getting over this) to Kerry.

Unless Kerry signs his Form 180, (and he won't) that would be illegal.

The military that Kerry slandered in the 1970's has far more honor than he does.

Not necessarily. He got the medals before he met with the N Viet Nam enemy in France, after he got back to the USA.

Something happened under a Clinton Naval Department that benefitted Kerry. I will be checking timelines....

According to some, they were "re-issued". They say that the only situation where they would be re-issued would be where they had been taken away previously due to not having an honorable discharge.""

Wouldn't they also be "reissued" if he "lost" them throwing them thru the fence at the White House????

If Kerry had been enlisted, you might be right that he would have been discharged in 1972.

On other threads discussing Kerry's discharge, freepers who were officers have repeatedly stated that an officer's obligation only terminates if the branch decides to end it or the officer resigns his commission.

And the branch ending it can be because of neutral reasons (strength adjustment, for example).

Use search for threads with "Kerry discharge", and you'll see that this ground has been gone over many times.

In the old days, the report would have been doing the research into Kerry's naval records. Now-days, the reporter's job is to report on others doing the digging?

What's wrong with this picture?

I agree that the Clinton angle to this scenario is very plausible. What makes me think so? Rembember when Bill was in the hospital for heart surgery and he and "Honest John" had that Saturday night heart to heart phone conversation about dropping the Vietnam war hero persona. That conversation was supposed to be confidential. Much to sKerry's horror the details of this conversation was all over the Monday daily papers. Only 4 people knew of that conversation. Bill, sKerry, Kerry aid Joe Lockhart and Hillary. Who spilled the beans? Well Bill did not talk to the press afterwards. Lockhart claims he did not leak it to the press. sKerry? Why would he do it - and like Charlie Manson said "you can't lie to yourself". So that only leaves one person.

On other threads discussing Kerry's discharge, freepers who were officers have repeatedly stated that an officer's obligation only terminates if the branch decides to end it or the officer resigns his commission.

I was a Naval officer and retired with 20 years of active and Reserve service.

The term "obligated service" refers to the service time you owe as a result of your contract.

Kerry's contract obligated him to three years of active duty after his commissioning date (16 December 1966), a period in the Ready Reserve that, when added to his active duty service would total five years and additional time in the Standby Reserve until the 6th anniversary of his commissioning.

His "obligated service" therefore ended on 16 December 1966.

It is true, however, that service may be extended beyond obligated service time. This applies to enlisted as well as officers in "Stop-Loss" situations and if UCMJ charges are pending.

Kerry's obligated service ended on 16 December 1972. If he did not get his Honorable Discharge it could be because:

1. Out of purely patriotic reasons, Kerry never resigned his commission in order to be available for future military service in case of national emergency .....(Highly unlikely)

2. Kerry received a less than honorable discharge that was later upgraded to honorable in 1978......(Very plausible)

3. Kerry was involuntarily extended in order to investigate charges prosecutable under the UCMJ. Reservists on Inactive status may be involuntarily detained in the service and even recalled to active duty for UCMJ offenses committed previously while on active duty. Kerry confessed to "war crimes" he allegedly committed in Vietnam while on active duty. Our sea-lawyer may have out-smarted himself.

Thanks for the clarification. Kerry could have completed or satisfied his obligation and still not be discharged, for the reasons the rest of your post sets forth.
