New York's Republican governor blames Democratic lawmakers for stalling reforms that could have stopped a reported 46,000 voters from being registered at the same time in New York City and Florida. Gov. George Pataki addressed the issue Friday in Tampa as part of a national tour that brought 20 Republican governors to swing-voting states in the presidential race.
Pataki contended Florida had moved beyond the voting debacle of the 2000 election, but he acknowledged a New York Daily News report about the illegal double registration of about 46,000 people.
``The Democratic Assembly keeps blocking reforms and making it really tough to pass federal voter registration standards,'' Pataki said, referring to one chamber of his state's legislative body.
Congress passed the Help America Vote Act in 2002 to give states federal funding for election commissions, registration systems and vote- count regulation. Each state must adopt a version of the act with specific processes in order to receive the federal aid.
New York's Republican- controlled Senate and Democrat-controlled Assembly passed different versions of the act in February. A bipartisan committee was convened to write a final version of the act, but the committee has been unable to reach a consensus.
Democrats say the problem involves Pataki and the Senate Republican leadership.
``Everyone knows there's an undercurrent in the Senate that wants to confer with the governor before passing anything,'' said Assemblyman Keith Wright, chairman of the Election Law Commission.
Wright agreed with Pataki, however, that New York's failure to pass the act has a direct effect on the double registration controversy.
The state comptroller's office has $68 million waiting to be used for a centralized list that would identify voters registered in multiple states and counties. That money cannot be used until New York passes the reforms.
``I'm worried that if we don't come up with something this year, we'll blow our money,'' Wright said.
Pataki spoke Friday at President Bush's Tampa campaign headquarters.
``I've been so impressed with our support in Tampa,'' he said. ``Every age and every race is represented, and it should give hope to the people of America.''
Bump.
Democrats doing this? I'm shocked!; shocked I tell you!/sarcasm
Proving once again that Republicans have to work twice as hard because Democrats vote twice as often.
46,000 people. Considering Bush's margin of victory in FL in 2000, that is absolutely staggering.
I wonder if Pataki sent the list to Florida so they could purge the double dips?
Maybe the U.S. attorney in NY, old Elliot Spizer, could investigate and file charges...no, what am I thinking, he and they are Democrats.
Fraud bump - anyone ping Hannity, Rush, Fox?
On local news at 5pm (Ch 4 Pittsburgh) they had a report that they "spot checked" voter rolls for Allegheny Co. where city of Pittsburgh is located and found 3,000 double registered voters! In a spot check! They then interviewed one woman they said had voted twice in the past 4 elections. She denied it, but they showed registrations side by side and one had her maiden name and the other just first and last names, no middle or maiden and signatures certainly looked identical. Then they found people who had voted in past 35 elections who had been removed from rolls without their knowing it. This was not even about new registrations. This is just the same old, same old that Dems do every election.
Shows why they were so mad in 2000, their attempt to steal that election was 527 votes shy. If I only would of punched that other stack of ballets algore would have won ;)
ping!!
So why didn't the Election Commission, or whomever, not do this double-checking immediately after the 2000 Election? They KNEW 2000 was one giant voter fraud by the Dems.
This is the very FIRST GD Time I have ever heard big time Republican mention it. Well, it's a start. Good post and I know it ain't your fault GRRRRRRRRR. How does this Pataki-dufus think it's going to help now, with 2 weeks to go before the ''Rats steal the state of FLorida with NY/NJ votes?
every one should be checked out...if they voted twice in 200O, they should go to jail, even if they are in their eighties. These are probably Roosevelt democrats, or other such die hards, who thought this was "cute". Corrupt snowbirds.Should be jailbirds!
Well, why wansn't this woman charged with a FELONY?
Until we take voter fraud seriously we run into the possibility of more 2000 fiascos on the horizon.
