Charge Of Bribing Russia, France With Oil Silly: Annan
New York, Oct. 17 (NNN): United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has dismissed allegations that France and Russia might have been willing to ease sanctions on Iraq in return for oil.
Kofi Annan told the Jonathan Dimbleby programme on British TV channel ITV1 the claims were "inconceivable". "These are very serious and important governments. You are not dealing with banana republics," he added.
The allegations were made earlier this month in a report by the US-led Iraqi Survey Group.
Chief US weapons inspector Charles Duelfer said he had found evidence in documents that Iraqi intelligence under Saddam Hussein had tried to bribe foreign nationals from a number of countries to obtain the lifting of sanctions. Particular attention was allegedly given to French and Russian nationals due to the fact that the two countries hold permanent seats on the UN Security Council.
But Annan firmly dismissed the claims: "I don't think the Russian or the French or the Chinese government would allow itself to be bought because some of their companies are getting contracts from the Iraqi authorities," he said, adding, "I don't believe it at all.
In the same interview, being broadcast on Sunday, the UN secretary general also said the US-led war on Iraq had not made the world a safer place. "I cannot say the world is safer when you consider the violence around us, when you look around you and you see the terrorist attacks around the world, and you see what is going on in Iraq, " he said. "We have a lot of work to do as an international community to try and make the world safer."

Keep whistling past the graveyard, Kofi. But that bony hand will land on your shoulder. Sooner than you think, too.

"You are not dealing with banana republics," he added... Nice talk for a fellow from Ghana. This was the place, recall, where the very unlamented Kwame Nkrumah was deposed by a military coup, which was followed by another, and then another, and then a fellow named Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings held his own, executed half of the government, allowed an election, and shortly thereafter held another coup...

Put the blame on Bob Dole who helped Clinton install this guy.

Kofi Annan would say "This is un-important to the greater agenda. Now lets talk about this illegal war in Irag."
This guy is a joke and so is the UN.

I laughed out loud when I heard him say this. He offers not ONE item that disproves the charges, just a "My goodness, how could this be" attitude.
Kofi....It IS what it is! Europe is corrupt...had been so for a very long time. If Charac was not president he likely would be in jail from corruption charges from when he was Mayor of Paris. Only problem is that Europe has a get out of jail free card by providing their elected "officials" with immunity from prosecution while in office.
You stupid IDIOT -- you come from a world where corruption is the norm. That's why you can't -- or won't -- own up to it when it's laid out before you.

Kofi, old pal. This is what we call the "First Rule of Holes." If you find yourself in a deep one, it's best to stop digging.

Kofi Annan told the Jonathan Dimbleby programme on British TV channel ITV1 the claims were "inconceivable". By answering the question, Kofi, you conceived it.
"These are very serious and important governments. You are not dealing with banana republics," he added.
True, they're worse: They're banana social democracies.

So America could take the wild step of starting a war just for oil, but France and Russia would not resist such a war in order to get oil for themselves? Which is more difficult, starting/fighting a war/occupation/rebuilding of a nation or making a few political protests?
