BAGHDAD, Iraq - A statement posted on an Islamic militant Web site on Sunday made a rare announcement of the death of a member of the terror group Tawhid and Jihad, said to have been killed fighting the Americans in Fallujah.
The announcement, whose authenticity could not be confirmed, said Sheik Abu Hafs al-Libi "fell as a martyr on the field of battle while he was fighting the American forces and their traitorous agents," meaning Iraqi government forces.
He was identified as the head of a commission of Tawhid and Jihad, led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. It was unclear when al-Libi, which may be a pseudonym, was killed, but U.S. and Iraqi government forces have been attacking targets around Fallujah for the past four days.
Tawhid and Jihad, as well as other insurgent groups in Iraq, rarely announce the deaths of members. It also was unusual to declare that he was killed in Fallujah since leaders of the Sunni Triangle city have disputed U.S. and Iraqi government statements that members of the terror organization are fighting there.
The announcement was posted on the Web site of Ansar al-Sunnah, said to be a separate insurgent group active in Sunni Muslim areas of the country.
The statement vowed to avenge the death of the official.
Something's happened. There is this announcement and also the allegiance announcement to OBL. You wonder if they are healing some internal rift or there is a disruption in the flow of Saudi funds or something. Also there was the odd Jordanian arrest warrants which were just issued, which make me think that it doesn't make sense to issue the warrants after all this time unless there were some captives in Iraq or elsewhere meeting the description. Call it a disturbance in the force.
Also there is some posting about an attack on the USA by Tues.
Missed that one. Do you know where it came from? I'm not aware of any step up in US security levels.
I like the way you think. I agree, something is up, and it looks good for our side. There are a lot of things it doesn't make sense to distribute widely, but you can infer quite a bit by the, ah, "disturbances".
Yesterday the rumor of the reports of the capture of Zarqawi and then the denial of the capture of Zarqawi.
This evening on Rita Cosby some of the retired military talking heads said that they thought something big was about to come down.

Maybe; 1) this Sheik Abu Hafs al-Libi was really killed by a political enemy, or 2) he is not really dead but wants someone to think he is, or 3) I've seen too many "danger/intrigue/betrayal" type movies.
